Thank You Ai Orthodontics

Thank you to Ai Orthodontics for their absolutely incredible generosity!  Dr. Aejaaz A. Issa and his team have donated $3,000 to the Emmaus Rotary Club, East Penn Food Program, Go Fund Me campaign.
This kindness has brought us to 25% of our current fundraising goal for the program. Many thanks to Karen Hobson for sharing the Go Fund Me campaign with Dr. Issa.  Ai Orthodontics has been a huge supporter of Emmaus Rotary. We are very grateful for community business partners like Ai Orthodontics who lead through service above self.

Does this inspire you to give? Start YOUR team!  Since we started in July we have raised $4,255 of our $10,000 Go Fund Me Campaign goal to support The Emmaus Rotary Club, East Penn Food Program.  As I have written before, it is important that our Club Members get involved in sharing this campaign so that we can reach our goal of $10,000.  Donating and sharing is VERY easy and with just a few seconds a week, together we will make our goal! (If you need instructions on how to donate follow the steps in the read more section on how you can donate and share)

 Join the team!
SHARING IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THIS CAMPAIGN TO GAIN MOMENTUM. Creating your own fundraising page as part of the campaign is a great way to invite your family, friends, co-workers, clients, and others to join you in our mission to help feed hungry children!

How to do it:
1) Click the blue JOIN button.

2) Sign in - follow the prompts to create an account or log in with Facebook if you have one.

3) Click the blue JOIN THE TEAM button.  This will automatically make you a member of the team.  Regardless of donation amount.  You can donate whatever amount you'd like even $10 puts us closer to our goal.  EVERY single dollar matters!  You can create a team without donating (I tested this on my husband's cell phone to join the team it took 5 second to do) The goal here is create a page to engage your network and share the information to attract donors.
4) Now share your link! You can share multiple ways. Facebook, Twitter or copy your link and past it into an email to go out to your clients, workplace, family, friends, and other organizations your a member of.  Remember to share often on your social media pages!  Please consider creating a team for your business.

It's that simple. An easy way for "People of Action" like us to....well...take action

If you need help with how to share you may reach out to me and I will do my very best to walk you through it or think of some creative ways you can help spread the word.

I have included an email that I sent out to another board that I sit on. Feel free to use it! Just click "read more" below.

President's Message, October 20, 2020

Dear Fellow Rotarians-

Do you see what I see?

ROTARY AT A GLANCE - published figures for April 2018

Worldwide there are 1, 230,399 Rotary members in 35,784 clubs.

The average club member is 35.

There are 512,417 Interact students in 22,279 clubs.

An average Interact club has 23 members.

Another measurement for us. Yes, our numbers are above average. Let’s keep going.  In a stressful, demanding time, we continue to seek ways to make a difference and to serve others above self.

Emmaus Rotary continues to pack and distribute food bags to East Penn School District students and families facing food insecurity. Speak to Rick Zayaitz or Cindy Hornaman if you can help.

Contact Nicole Steirer or Karen Hobson if you can help plant trees this Sunday morning or if you can be a marshall for the “reverse” Halloween Parade on Saturday night, October 31st.

We are looking for a Rotarian to help coordinate with bereaved families to extend our care and to accompany them when we lay a brick in the deceased Rotarian’s memory at the Emmaus Remembrance Garden. Mike Waddell is our contact as he is a member of the Garden’s Board.

And, please, talk to me if you are uncertain about how or where to plug in as everyone has passions and gifts that can forward our mission.  There is a spot for you on a committee.

This Thursday, following our regular meeting at Brookside Country Club and on Vox Tandem, there will be a Board meeting. All interested members are invited and encouraged to come.

And a shout out to the Emmaus Rotary Team which walked this last Saturday, October 17th to raise money for the District’s virtual “Race to Zero” End Polio Now (aka “Purple Pinkie Event”). Thank you to all our sponsors!

Yours in service,

Lexa Shallcross

Emmaus Rotary President 2020-2021

The following safety guidelines to be followed at Brookside Country Club: UPDATED 11/24/20

  • Masks can be removed for eating and drinking only but are expected to be worn at all other times, inside or outside. With the case count rising we are going to present to our membership that masks are always expected to be worn while inside and outside in dining areas.
  • BCC purchased a stand-alone thermometer that will be arriving this week for the foyer. It will be constantly on. Guests simply stand in front of it and it reads your body temperature. It will give you a single beep if someone is good to go, but it will set off a mini alarm if someone tests high. If you test high you need to retry, and if you test high again you are expected to leave the building immediately.
  • Tables will be set 6 ft apart to observe social distancing and each table will seat only 5 people.
  • There will be multiple hand sanitizer stations located throughout the Clubhouse.  We encourage guests to use hand sanitizer upon arrival and throughout their time at Brookside.
  • Buffets will now be served by staff of Brookside (gloves will be worn by those serving food.)
  • Coffee will also need to be served (no station) and we will have to utilize single use packets such as salt, pepper, creamer, ketchup, and syrup.

It is imperative that if they feel sick or have contracted COVID - 19, you must stay home.

Please contact Lexa, Mike, or Meghan if you have any questions.  Please also review the Rotary District Covid-19 Guidelines in this newsletter.

Please bring a bag of candy, small toys or a monetary donation to the next meeting (10/22) You may also Venmo contributions to Don Blose with a note that it’s for candy @DonBlose.

OR drop your donations off at Ai Orthodontics or  Eric J Loch Diamond Jewelers during business hours.
People of Action! Community Service Committee
On Saturday December 5th, our Emmaus Rotary participated in Emmaus's Old Fashioned Christmas at the Emmaus Triangle.  Nicole and Karen help children write letters to Santa and "mail" them. An awesome time was had by all and what a great way to get into the Christmas Spirit!  Thanks to all of our Rotary Elves who helped!

Karen and Nicole from the Community Service Committee are collecting any gift cards and other items you may be willing to donate over this holiday period for needy Lehigh Valley families. Last year many Emmaus Rotarians took on getting gifts for needy local children in our area with Angel Network and Zion's Food Pantry.  Zion's Food Pantry are asking for gift cards of  a $25 value to either Walmart or Target to help them spread the cheer to local families.  Also Turning Point has various items of household needs as they move into new homes.  We have also been asked by Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley for $25 gift cards for a drive-by party for the children. Contact Karen or Nicole for more information and for how you can get your donation to the right place!

The Emmaus Rotary Fellowship Committee thanks all who came out to enjoy building goodwill and better friendships together at Pumpkin Painting Day on Sunday, October 25th.

Also many thanks to Aldi Grocery Store, Trexlertown for donating the pumpkins!

Looking Ahead to the ERC's Centennial

Colleagues,

On December 16, 1925, fourteen Emmaus residents got together at the Broad Street Hotel and decided to organize a Rotary club—this at the suggestion of one Errol Peters, an Allentown Rotary club member, who would forever be known as the club’s Godfather.  March 18, 1926 marked the first official meeting of the club when its charter was presented by District Governor Gilbert Palen.  Thus began what would prove to be a meaningful experience for many hundreds of Rotarians over the years.

I have been asked to help lead the club’s efforts over the next few years in getting ready for what we hope will be a bang-up celebration.  You may ask:  why start now?  Having recently served on the Borough of Emmaus’ 250thanniversary celebration committee, I can testify to the need to begin early.  Such celebrations typically take place over many months before the actual big day itself arrives.  That said, we will need to think about just what we might want to do going forward.

Several things immediately come to mind:  First, a club assembly should be held soon, devoted to brainstorming among our members as to your ideas about what sorts of activities could well be included in the celebration.

Second, this would then lead to identifying volunteers to serve on an initial organizing committee.  Using the Emmaus celebration planning as an example, there would undoubtedly be a myriad of subcommittees coming out of the woodwork later on as the club works out its approach.

Third, we must begin now identifying and documenting the club’s records and artifacts going all the way back to 1926.  Indeed, Gary Rohrbach and I have begun doing just that.  We spent several hours this past week in the basement of the Edward Jones offices on the Emmaus Triangle, going through lots of material, including old Trumpets, board minutes, committee reports, club fundraising activities, etc.  It has been fascinating with several historical jewels popping up.  But we are sure there must be other club records/artifacts out there in one or another location.  If any of you either have something or know someone who does, let us know, so that we can collect it and store everything in one place.

     Looking forward to 2026!

Roger Whitcomb

October Is....
October is...Community Economic Development Month

It was a nice coincidence that last week out Club meeting program was brought to us by Emmaus Main Street Partners, a Council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
  • The Emmaus Main Street Partners strive to improve the quality of life and the economic vitality of a vibrant and active Emmaus community through collaborative efforts among business owners, residents, volunteers, and other partners.
Our very own Ashley Lorah, Emmaus Main Street Manager/AVP of Affiliated Chambers was joined by Jessica O’Donnell EVP Affiliated Chambers to discuss the initiatives of Emmaus Main Street Partners.  I asked Ashley what key take aways would be most valuable for our members to know about EMSP.

  1. EMSP holds a lot of community and business combined events to unify. For example the Holiday Cheers Trail and Small Business Saturday. https://web.lehighvalleychamber.org/events/Emmaus-Small-Business-Saturday-837901/details

  2. Their partnership with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce has increased the reach and exposure businesses and organizations (like Rotary) have through membership. For example social media reach, the “Day in the Life of Emmaus” videos, and radio interviews with WDIY “On Every Main Street” series.

  3. EMSP works with Emmaus Borough to implement events and initiatives like the Veterans Banners project, movies in the park, music in the park and more.

  4. EMSP has a Business Development Committee that meets regularly to define the needs of the business districts and create improvement projects. The BDC committee has received grants from The Chamber’s Main Street Lehigh Valley and worked with Borough on projects such as parking way-finding signage, seasonal banners, and flower planters. The committee also released and distributed a map and guide of Emmaus with a business directory, historical sites and general information for residents and visitors. Check it out here! https://www.lehighvalleychamber.org/uploads/1/1/6/3/116374903/final_digital_copy_emsp_map2__side_1_.jpg

Thank you Ashley and Jess for presenting to our Club and for ALL the hard work and hours you put into helping Emmaus be a great place to do business, work, live and play!

Keep it Moving
Last week we were joined by Susan Reagan, of St. Lukes Rehab who got our blood pumping after breakfast. Susan coached us through a variety of exercises for healthy aging...for all ages. As Susan puts it we can prevent our “golden years” from becoming “rusty years” through our exercise goals.

GOALS:
Improve - strength, endurance, balance, and coordination, joint health
Lower - blood glucose, blood pressure, bad cholesterol
Increase - bone mass, energy level
Decrease - stress and anxiety
Weight reduction

HOW TO GET STARTED:
(If you have any pre-existing conditions, first consult your Doctor)
Choose an activity you’ll enjoy and stick with.
Start slowly and gradually build up your tolerance.
Get into a routine.
Find a work out buddy.
Always warm up, stretch and cool down.

Rotary District 7430 COVID-19 Guidelines

COVID-19 is impacting us all in our personal, professional and Rotary lives.  We must base our decisions about Rotary activities on the health and safety of our members and compliance with government and health regulations.  Even though we may not be able to conduct the usual weekly in person meetings, many of our clubs are leading or participating in food and other relief programs in their communities.  These efforts will likely be continuing through the balance of this Rotary year and into the future.

With this in mind, the following are guidelines for all Rotary District 7430 activities:

  • All guidelines set forth by the Governor, counties and other authorized persons in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the CDC should be followed.
  • Should any Rotarian be diagnosed with or have symptoms that they suspect to be consistent with COVID-19, that Rotarian shall:
    • Not participate in any Rotary event that involves a personal appearance at the event.
    • Report their diagnoses or symptoms to the Rotarian supervising any program in which they have participated in-person within fourteen (14) days before the diagnoses or occurrence of symptoms.
We also suggest that you adopt guidelines for your clubs that reflect the current health crisis.
