The financial numbers are in and I am proud to report that our now "annual" Bags and Beef Event (AKA Cornhole Tournament and Beef & Beer) has raised over $6000 toward the East Penn Food Coalition. I can not say enough about this fantastic committee: Meghan "The Rock" Reed, Rick Zayaitz, Don Blose, Doug Brinker, Courtney Kennedy and Steve Gould and with a lot of help from our President Lexa Shallcross and President-Elect Mike Waddell. And of course nothing is possible without our awesome sponsors:
Event Sponsor: Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate
Play Sponsor: Keystone Precision Solutions
Board Sponsors: Ai Orthodontics, Embassy Bank, Spillman Farmer Architects, Edward Jones Financial Advisors
Other Sponsors: Vinyl Press; Eric Loch Diamond Jewelers; Turf Pro; and our secret sponsor of the band.
When was the last time you got to disavow being the Queen of the World? Or King?
I just got to do that in order to reassure Gail Micca, Allentown West Rotary Club, who had phoned. She wanted to make sure no toes would be stepped on as Allentown West was planning to meet temporarily at Brookside every other Wednesday morning thru July.
I tell you that for two reasons. First, they are having trouble finding a permanent meeting spot. So if you have ideas, let’s pass them along in companionship. Second, to alert you that those Wednesday morning meetings might make easy make-up times for anyone who has missed several of our meetings.
Rotary is not just a pay your dues and get to wear the pin organization. We come together for service as leaders and entrepreneurs in our community. We have skills and contacts. We know how to collaborate and get things done. So your attendance at regular meetings, committee meetings, service projects, and fellowship events counts in many significant ways.
Read the report from Sal Verrastro on the success of our inaugural Cornhole Tournament and Beef n Beer event held May 23, 2021, at Gio’s Italian in Macungie.
Consider how the Flag Subscription Program led by Eric Loch broke thru its own goals and set out 60 USA flags for the Memorial Day weekend.
Note Cindy Hornaman’s count that Emmaus Rotary has put in 859 service hours in the Feeding Program to date. And while that may be our biggest effort to make a difference in our community, it is one among 10 others. Wow!
At this Thursday’s meeting, we will be voting on a by-law change that will restore our term limits for our Board Directors. I am looking forward to learning from the presenters as one of the three languages I have tried to learn is ASL - American Sign Language. And I hope to see you all there.
As a reminder we will continue the masks optional for all future in person meetings until further notice. However, we want to emphasize that everyone’s safety is very important so please use the Zoom option if you for whatever reason don’t feel comfortable attending an in-person meeting.
Please Note that if you are attending virtually please use the following NEW ZOOM link!

DON'T FORGET - This is our food collection week. Ralph Lewis will be standing by the check-in-table to collect food for the needy. Please bring any non-perishable food and Ralph will make sure that it gets delivered to the food bank. In lieu of food, Ralph welcomes and collects donations which will also go to the food bank. Lastly for those in Virtual Land who would also like to donate food, Ralph will wait for an additional 15 minutes after the meeting if you want to stop by the Brookside CC and drop of some food donations. The Emmaus Rotary Club thanks everyone for their generosity!
The Emmaus Rotary would like to spotlight one of our newest member Keith Heffner. The following is a transcript is from Keith himself:
"I was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley. I graduate from Parkland High School and DeSales University.
I started with the Allentown Police Department in 1999 and retired this Past December after a little more than 21 years. I was a patrolman for 10 years and a Sergeant for the last 11. I worked night shift for about 16 of my 21 years. I was also on the Emergency Response Team (SWAT) for 13 years.
I currently live in Zionsville with my wife Nicole, my 15-year-old son, Nick, and my twin 13-year-old daughters Alyssa and Kylie. My wife is a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and works in many of the local jails. My son is on the Emmaus HS fitness team and is a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. He hopes to earn his Eagle Scout in the next year. My daughters play volleyball and basketball on the Eyer Middle School team and play on a Club Volleyball team.
I became a Farmers Insurance Agent because of the great opportunity that they offer to agency owners. I was unsure of what I wanted to do after retirement but came upon the Farmers opportunity to be my own boss. I am excited most to learn a completely new career, including owning my own business. I spent the last 21 years trying to help people and love that I can continue to help people but in a completely different way.
When it comes to the Rotary Club I was introduced to Cindy by a Rotarian from Warminster.
After coming to a few meetings, I knew I wanted to become a member. Everyone in the Emmaus Rotary has been so welcoming which is not a trait you find in every organization.
I am looking forward to meeting everyone, getting to know everyone and helping with the many initiatives the Emmaus Rotary is involved with.
After I finally do retire for good one day, I would like to visit as many of the Caribbean Islands as possible."

A top priority for Rotary International is to value diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within its membership and activities. District 7430 has responded to this goal by establishing a DEI Committee.
Since August 2020, the DEI Committee has actively been exploring and defining how DEI can benefit service and membership in our District and has been creating a program to implement those benefits. We are pleased to share that much progress has been made developing resources to assist your Club in reflecting the communities you serve.
The DEI Committee would like to introduce its initial presentation to generate and start conversation within your Clubs. District-wide presentations are scheduled in the Harleysville Rotary Club on June 9 at 7:00 am and in the Quakertown Rotary Club on June 15th at 7:30 am. Information to join these meetings is available on the District website (click here.)
We invite all Clubs and all Rotarians to be open to ongoing conversations as we grow healthy and vibrant clubs reflecting DEI. We are all learning together as we educate, enhance and empower one another.
The ceremony at the Remembrance Garden brick installation on June 3rd was for three of our past Rotary Members. Our Vice president Michael Waddell facilitated the brick installation of Bob Halsey, Bob Pfander and Paul Sarver. Below are the highlights.

Rotary Zones 28 and 32 (which includes our District 7430) are partnering with Zone 33 to respond to the COVID-19 crisis in India. We have received a special request from RI Director Valarie Wafer for donations from Rotary Clubs and Rotarians to a special fund to assist with providing oxygen concentrators.
Rotarians are partnering with a disaster relief organization, SEWA International (SEWA). The goal is to raise $250,000 which SEWA will match. SEWA is an international organization recognized in the United States as a 501(c)(3) charity with a 4-star charity navigator rating. Learn more about SEWA’s campaign to defeat COVID-19 in India at https://www.sewausa.org/Covid-19-India.
Those partners will purchase the oxygen concentrators in Singapore and elsewhere and have them shipped to India. RI Director Kamal Sanghvi, of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), and other Indian Rotarians there will be involved in the distribution and transportation of these products to the most critical parts of India.
If you would like to donate, please send your support checks to the Rotary District 6400 Foundation, with your email ID.
Check payable to:
