President's Message

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Three things. One is fun and upbeat. The second is in the interest of full participation and transparency. And the last, is a reprise of something I put in the Trumpet almost three years ago when I was the editor as the Second Vice-president and which now seems good to look at again.

First, let's have some fun and raise money to help pay for the food we need to buy soon to fill the bags we are giving out weekly to students and families in the East Penn School District who are facing food insecurity and h u n g e r.  Our first-ever, Superbowl LV lottery pop-up fundraiser is detailed in this issue of the Trumpet.  It is a chance too good to miss. Buy a $55 square (or two!) to join the excitement. Yes, you may put in for other family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. We need to sell all 100 squares to be able to give out cash-out prizes and to raise just over $3000 for our Feeding Program.

Second, next Thursday, January 28th, there will be a Board meeting following our regular meeting on Vox Tandem.  Everyone is welcome to the board meeting.  The agenda is currently being built. Please let me know if you have any items or concerns to be addressed.  Committee chairs are welcome to send along a written- email report.

Third, as our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group (DEI) was being formed, one of the first things we talked about was our opening Invocations for meetings.  We talked about thinking more of the invocation as an inspirational thought for the day rather than as a prayer. So, if you would like to know some of my thoughts, just use the "read more" feature. I hope you find what I say useful and as always, email, text, or phone me if questions come up.

Stay well. Keep out of the nasty Covid19 virus's path.  We are learning that several members of our Rotary community and their family members have positive test results. Please let us know what you need. How can we help? Be assured all of you have my sincerest best wishes and prayers. There will be post-pandemic time and we will see each other again, face to face.

Yours in Rotary,
Lexa Shallcross

Happy Dollars 2021
Dear Rotarians:

Please Don't Forget that we have an anonymous donor who will match all Happy Dollars collect in January 2021.  THIS IS OUR LAST WEEK!!!!.  Show you generosity this week at our Virtual Meeting and help our Sargeant At Arms!  Thanks to our Donor for ringing in the New Year this way.

Weekly Door Prizes!
DON"T FORGET!  Weekly Door Prize Donations Needed! Be our next meeting's prize sponsor!
It seems like we all like the idea of winning a festive prize at our meetings (in person or online).  We have had some very generous and fun donations since incorporating this new aspect to our meetings. Many thanks to all who have donated a prize!  It is a nice way to give back to each other.
Do you have a hobby or talent you can share with the club? Maybe you love to bake, sew, or garden. Let’s get creative with our door prizes and share a little bit about ourselves in the process!
How about we show some love to the local businesses in our community? They have shown us support with raffle donations and sponsorships throughout the years. Consider purchasing a $20.00 gift card from one of the many small businesses in the East Penn Area.  As we know every little bit helps. It's also a great way to start a conversation about Rotary and invite business owners and managers to a club meeting.
So if you’d like to sponsor a door prize contact Don Blose, Meghan Reed, Sal Verrastro or Lexa Shallcross.
Rotary Tidbits

Did you Know?  Rotary Members often ask "How do I make up a Meeting if I missed it"?  According to our Bylaws if you intend on making up any meetings "the Emmaus Rotary Club requires meetings to be made up within 30 days before or after the date of the missed meeting. A club member must notify the Club Secretary (Sir Jim Palmquist) in writing of his/her makeups, either by letter, text, note delivered at a club meeting, or by email.”   Feel free to view our past meetings as they are recorded and placed online!  NOW YOU KNOW!

March Is....

March is Water and Sanitation Month

Clean water is a basic need for human beings.
When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water, which is what motivates our members to build wells, install rainwater harvesting systems, and teach community members how to maintain new infrastructure.
While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to also improve sanitation facilities in undeveloped countries. Members start by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure and then add education programs to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits.

Rotary District 7430 COVID-19 Guidelines

COVID-19 is impacting us all in our personal, professional and Rotary lives.  We must base our decisions about Rotary activities on the health and safety of our members and compliance with government and health regulations.  Even though we may not be able to conduct the usual weekly in person meetings, many of our clubs are leading or participating in food and other relief programs in their communities.  These efforts will likely be continuing through the balance of this Rotary year and into the future.

With this in mind, the following are guidelines for all Rotary District 7430 activities:

  • All guidelines set forth by the Governor, counties and other authorized persons in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the CDC should be followed.
  • Should any Rotarian be diagnosed with or have symptoms that they suspect to be consistent with COVID-19, that Rotarian shall:
    • Not participate in any Rotary event that involves a personal appearance at the event.
    • Report their diagnoses or symptoms to the Rotarian supervising any program in which they have participated in-person within fourteen (14) days before the diagnoses or occurrence of symptoms.
We also suggest that you adopt guidelines for your clubs that reflect the current health crisis.
