Many years ago, the administration of the EPSD was introduced to the teachings of Stephen Covey and his Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The only one I really remember is “begin with the end in mind” but I’m sure that the other six were equally useful.
I’m using the above quote and the only principle I remember as the main point of today’s message for two simple points. First, let’s think about keeping the end in mind. To me the “end” is helping people both locally and globally.
Second, as Rotarians we have “committed” to be involved in the work of our club…attendance, service projects, serving on committees, doing good works, being good citizens, etc. We are blessed with Nicole and Karen who work hard to find and facilitate super service events and we all need to sign-up and help. So, here are the links to the sign-up geniuses that they have put out to us…sign-up, put them on your calendar, asterisk them, circle them, underline them and enjoy doing good work that help our community!
Every person’s life ends the same way. It’s the details of how they lived and how they died that distinguishes one from another.
I’m feeling a bit downhearted this morning so please bear with me. All club presidents are asked each year to submit basic information to the District conference organizers about club members who passed away in this Rotary year. So, I dutifully put together the requested information for Wilmer, Dale and Gordie and as I did, I found myself reminiscing about my recollections of each and I’m saddened that I didn’t get to know them better.
Sure, we can’t get to know every Rotarian in a club our size really well, but I should have taken the time to get to know more about each of them rather than learning about their amazingly good lives via their obituaries. So, what wisdom can I impart now that I know that I missed a great opportunity? Here are my “learnings”;
1. The classification talks are important to give each of us a glimpse into a member’s life. It doesn’t have to be a stand-up talk, it can be a written piece in the Trumpet or emailed to everyone or maybe we should do video classification talks and start to make files for future generations?
2. Sitting at different tables at breakfast is a brief but important opportunity to meet and learn about fellow Rotarians. I’m as guilty as everyone else that doesn’t move around so I’ll commit to visiting different tables each week beginning in July!
3. Being involved in our many events/activities is one of the best ways to get to know our fellow Rotarians. I fondly remember working several of the Wheels of Time food stand events and learning about the members while having some coffee and an egg sandwich!
Yes, I miss Wilmer, Dale and Gordie but in their honor let’s all try to learn more about our fellow members while we can. Also, following are their obituaries. Please give them a look and hopefully you can learn something about each of them that inspires you to be a better person and a great Rotarian.
The Club Assembly this week will be an opportunity for you to learn about our club committees one on one. This is a chance for new members to find a committee that is a good fit, and for longer standing members to re-engage or try something new. The goal:
To find a committee that gives you a sense of purpose, meaningful service, and FUN!
For members to learn what other committees are doing and inspire each other. For committee chairs to build strong teams and do great work together!

The Board noticed last month that our By-Laws needed a minor tweak to allow electronic voting for new members and other business of the Club. The following change to Article VI has been approved by the Board and to become official has to be voted on by the Membership. This vote will take place at our regular meeting on April 7th.
Article VI: Method of Voting
The business of this Club pertaining to voting as in the case of new members, election of directors, bylaws changes, and other items deemed to be determined by a vote shall include but not be limited to Viva Voce, transactions by electronic means, and/or by ballot which can be done in person or via mail.
We were presented with an awesome program to help new businesses and existing ones through Rotary. Derrick outlined how the program works and the obstacles faced and conquered by new start-ups. Rick Zayaitz and Mario Cozubbo are working from our Club to move this program forward.
The North Region Rotary Speech Contest was held at Willow Lane Elementary School on April 2, 2022. Contestants Emma DelaCruz, from Emmaus High School, Mackenzie Laub, from Whitehall High School, and Sydney Bennett, from Central Catholic High School, all competed successfully and demonstrated their public speaking talents. Special thanks to Rose Galleano-Phillips, Erin Murphy, Cindy Hornaman, Kate Kieres, and Samantha Drennan for serving as judges for the competition.
Now is time to renew for 2022. The price is the same as last year, only $49.00 for the year. This will include having our great Flag put on your property 6 times this year starting with Memorial Day.
I will be set up to take payments this week at Rotary. I can take credit cards or your check.
Emmaus Rotarians truly do live a lifestyle of Service Above Self!
Many of us help with other organizations to raise funds for great causes. If you wish to mention your outside fund raising event at Rotary, just put up four Happy Dollars and let us know about what is going on. If I have a website link to your cause I will post it here.

Can Tabs For The Miracle League LV / Submitted By Bob Halsey
In 2018 We started collecting the Tabs from all types of cans Soda, Beer, Seltzer, Tuna Fish, Sardines, Soup Cans, Etc. In 2018 we were able to deliver Five Full One Gallon Jugs of Tabs…Last year, 2019 we were able to deliver Three Full One Gallon Jugs of Tabs. So far this year 2020 we now have One Full One Gallon Jugs. I would hope we can again this year, 2020, can fill at least another Five Full One Gallon Jug OR MORE. I turn these into the Miracle League in the Middle of October, right before Halloween. They turn them into the Dupont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington Delaware. Other organizations also collect these Tabs, in total the Hospital has been able sell these for enough Money to pay 75% of the Utilities Cost in their Ronald House, where Families to stay at a very Nominal Cost when their Handicapped Children need to go for Treatment. You can bring Tabs every Thursday to our regular Breakfast Meetings.
