A few weeks ago Joseph Marlin, the founder of Plant A Row, spoke to us about how his program is providing freshly grown vegetables from over 300 gardeners each summer.Rotarians Mike Waddell and Tony Moyer would like to give this a try with our club starting Thursday, June 20 (note change from June 13) and running the second Thursday of each month through September 12. All you need to do is grow some vegetables, dedicate a portion for the hungry in the Lehigh Valley, wash and bag them and give the produce to Mike or Tony at the sign-in table when you enter....simple as that. Examples of what to bring - lettuce, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, and much more. Questions - Ask Mike or Tony.
On Thursday, June 13, 2019, Russ Pacala, Principal at Spillman Farmer Architects, spoke about building the Lombardo Welcome Center at Millersville University which is a Net-Positive Energy building. The Center meets the Living Building Challenge outlined by LEED which takes one year of occupancy before certification is granted. Millersville hopes to be a carbon neutral campus by the year 2024.
The Welcome Center is a Net Positive (not net zero or carbon neutral) which means it produces as much energy as it consumes. It includes a large Lobby, Auditorium, and offices for Admissions/Marketing/Student Housing. There are educational displays explaining the building's uniqueness. Emmaus Rotarian Sal Verrastro introduced Russel Pacala, his life-long friend, business partner and fellow Rotarian (Bethlehem Morning Star Club) as the morning's presenter after collaborating to set up the audio visual equipment.
Considerations before building included the sun direction, shaded areas, use of the building-- number of people and the hours. Green Features include over 500,000 solar panels in a wave design, more insulation than required by code, 20 geothermal wells, specially designed glass panels with glazing and glare control and frittered design. Run off from the roof goes into a rain garden and runs down a rain chime. There is an anticipated 25 year pay back period.
On a recent sunny, Saturday morning 5 - Zone 1 clubs came together to help 2nd Harvest Food bank begin the process of educating, teaching and helping future farmers discover their passion for growing food for their own consumption. We put together 25 planting bins, set in the grass placed landscaping paper in each bin and then fenced the perimeter. We will hopefully have the topsoil delivered soon and we can all help get that into the bins and then the growing can begin!
We had Rotarians from Whitehall, Slatington, Allentown West, Emmaus and Allentown help with the project. This was a project that began at the PETS training in January 2018 that finally was finished after our ensuing monsoon season that lasted 12 months.
I would like to thank all of the clubs that participated, we had a fun time meeting Jessica the Executive Director at 2nd Harvest and some of her staff. I cannot wait to see what happens next at 2nd Harvest to help the 72 food banks they serve in Northeast Pennsylvania. I believe this is the first time all 5 clubs came together to do a project like this.
Please plan to attend our Changeover Ceremony to Pass the Gavel at our regular morning meeting on Thursday, June 27, 2019. During the meeting you will be invited to stand before the assembly in order of your service.
We thank you for your service to our club, the community, and to District and Rotary International.
Emmaus Rotary Club dues are $220 per year or $110 per half year. The Club Secretary sends a statement of dues due in mid-May. They are due to be paid by June 15. Please pay them in a timely fashion by mailing the check to Jim or giving him your check at a meeting. For May 16 and May 23, give your checks to Craig Reber as Jim Palmquist will miss those meetings.
A few Rotarians have already paid the $110 upcoming dues. I will send them an email saying they do not owe dues this six months and I will not send them a statement.
If you prefer a paper dues statement, you can pick them up in mid-May at the sign in table along with a self-addressed envelope to mail the check to Jim.
Please bring any used children’s books k-3 and 3-5 to our Rotary meetings for the next 4 weeks. These books will be used and donated as a part of our Feeding East Penn School District summer reading and food program at Lincoln Elementary School. Sal Verrastro will collect them for us and our club will be distributing them to needy children in the East Penn School District.
How to earn a Perfect Attendance Pin each Rotary year [July 1 through June 30]
If you have to miss a regular weekly meeting of our Club, you can make up for that absence within 14 days before or after the meeting by following the options described below. Members do not have to make up for times when our Club does not meet.
How to Make Up a Meeting at Another Club
You can get credit for attending the meeting of another Rotary Club, anywhere in the world. It’s easy. Here are the steps:
Identify another club you would like to attend and find out when and where it meets.
To get meeting locations, times and days of the week clubs meet around the world, consult the Rotary International web site, www.rotary.org, and click on the “Club Finder” button near the top of the screen. Or download the app ‘Rotary Club Locator’.
When you arrive at the meeting place of the club you are visiting, ask for a makeup card to verify your attendance at the meeting. You should expect to pay the cost of your meal at that club meeting.
At the next meeting of our Club, give the makeup card to our Club Secretary or just mail it to the Club Secretary. If you fail to obtain a card, our Secretary will accept your word; just give a written report/email when and where you made up the meeting.
NOTE: If you attempt to make up a meeting at another club and find that for some reason the club is not meeting at its regular place and time, you can still be credited with a makeup. Just explain the situation to the Club Secretary in writing.
There are other ways of making up a meeting, too:
• Attending a Rotary International or District Convention, assembly, or District committee meeting.
• Attending a Board meeting of our Club, or formal Club Committee meeting.
• Attending and participating in a board-authorized Club service project or a Club-sponsored community event or meeting, excluding social events like pancake suppers, hockey events, etc.
• Attending e-club meetings. E-clubs are on-line meetings/makeup opportunities that don’t involve attending an online meeting but usually involve up to an hour of reading/writing and typically a fee similar to what we pay for an ERC meeting. E-clubs can be found online and some examples are:
It is the member’s responsibility to keep track of their meeting makeups and be sure someone sent the Secretary their makeup information. The Club Secretary records makeups received every week but is not responsible to monitor which meetings members have missed.
