President's Message - May 23, 2017
Many of us certainly appreciate the work that we are able to accomplish locally to help people.  Our East Penn community has a strong place in our hearts.  However, over past month we have seen the power of Rotary Internationally and the great need of humanity in all parts of the world.  Between our friends for Romania, Zambia, and the service cruise to the Dominican Republic and Cuba, humanities needs were on display.

Our Zambian Rotarians came to the United States with nothing in their pockets and simply the clothes on their backs. Yet, you would never know that with their glowing attitudes and eagerness to learn. As Cindy mentioned, clothing is a basic need that is limited in their village. Given our relationship, we are going to seek a way to assist them with at least this one basic need in a small way.

During Don, Alicia and Valerie's presentation, the need in the D.R. was clear. Between teaching English, making paper and pouring a cement pad, they demonstrated selfish service of humanity and made a dent in the needs that exist. The idea of packaging a vacation with a service activity is growing in our Rotary district.  If you have ideas on this or you are interested, please let us know.

This week we officially induct four new Rotarians into our club. Join us and let's give them a warm official welcome!

Cruise to Cuba and the Dominican Republic
Alicia, Valerie and Don had the opportunity of a lifetime to visit Cuba and the Dominican Republic.   Valerie and Alicia helped students learn English as a second language.  Since the Dominican is heavily invested in tourism it is important for anyone that wants a better job to learn English.  Spending time and energy is what Valerie and Alicia helping to accomplish the goal of having a workforce versed in a second language.  Don explored making paper helping increase productivity by over 500%   Everyone learned that teamwork especially when making paper by hand helps produce more paper thereby helping their friends have more paper to sell making more money for their families.  Everyone then contributed in building an addition to another persons home with concrete block, and concrete.  Hard work but after 15 years of getting block and putting his home together they helped another person realize his dreams.  Everyone on the trip realized how blessed they are to have what they have and the ability to give back.  Please see the pictures of their trip:

Door to Door
DOOR TO DOOR
                        By Edward Humes

Edward Humes has written a book entitled “Door to Door” which he correctly subtitles, “The Magnificent, Maddening, Mysterious World of Transportation”.  If you would like to learn about the future of driverless vehicles, logistics and why we cannot build our society out of traffic congestion, read this book – it is an easy read!  If you would like to hear Mr. Humes speak, he is the keynote speaker at the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee luncheon on June 8th.

Project Update for the Emmaus Rotary Club

This year, the Emmaus Rotary Club supported a Vocational Training Team Global Grant we call Colombia VTT Mediation GG 1745757.  This involves training 26 peacebuilders in Bogotá Colombia the past week of, May 8th through 12th.  Community leaders selected to participate came from Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia.

These leaders were trained by the International Training Institute, in collaboration with Mediators Beyond Borders Inc, a non-profit with a Memorandum of Understanding with Rotary International. This is the third of the series of trainings conducted by Rotary and its partners.

The peacebuilders will return to their home countries to engage in peacebuilding/mediation with ongoing support from trainers and another week of advanced training next year.

The International Training Institute went very well and they are thankful for our support of this project.  More postings are at

July 13, 2017.......Alisa Bowman Speaks About Transgender People

Rotary is a place where members get informed about subjects of interest in the community, especially on topics where there is a lack of information.  Transgender people are becoming a more common topic in the media, in legislation and in our community.

National Geographic in January 2017 and Time Magazine on Mar 15, 2017 did cover stories on trans people.   An article in January 2017 The Rotarian magazine page 30 discussed transgender Rotarians.  The Morning Call covered a trans student in East Penn School District in September 2016.  In 2017, the Boy Scouts allowed transgender children in their programs.

There are about 92 transgender people living in Macungie and 34 transgender people live in Emmaus, based on 0.3 percent of the US are transgender people.

Our speaker July 13th is the mom of a transgender child in Emmaus and will tell you her family’s story.  She is also the co-author of a book on the subject called Raising the Transgender Child: A Complete Guide for Parents, Families, and Caregivers by Michele Angello and our speaker Alisa Bowman.   Jim Palmquist will have a copy of the book to give away to anyone who is interested in reading more about the topic.  The first one to ask Jim for the book gets it!
