Sal Verrastro Expert Witness Salvation Army building collapse 2013
Picture of the three buildings in the collapse of the Hoagie city building in June of 2013.  Sal brought a new perspective to the events of the trial where he was the expert witness helping to defend the Architect the Salvation Army hired to inspect the building on the corner. Sal helped the Architect for the Salvation Army Building by explaining his comments and his notes about what may have to be accomplished to the building after demolition.  The events started in March of 2013 when the developer from NY decided to tear down the three buildings to the left of the Salvation Army location on the corner.  The developer wanted to purchase the Salvation Army store but it was not for sale.  Jack the Architect for the Salvation Army building was asked to come in and tell Mr Fraser (who was never present at the building...FACILITIES REPRESENTATIVE) what he (Jack) thought they may need to do the building after the demolition was completed next door.  One of the things was to take care of the what would now be an interior wall and make any necessary repairs. Jack made comments in his notes and his e-mail to Mr. Fraser about the chimney that was attached to the Hoagie City building.  The Chimney would have to come down and the developer would have the responsibility of replacing he chimney.  There were some cosmetic changes that would need to be completed on the interior but nothing that would affect the integrity of the building.
Jack took his notes after he heard of the building collapse and rewrote them so anyone else reading them would understand them and then destroyed the originals.  A mistake Jack later realized because the attorney's thought he was hiding something.  Sal as a witness reported that most if not all Architects have their own way of taking notes and the average person would not be able to read them.  Jack was excluded from the award because of Sal's testimony but in the end there was an award of over $200 million dollars of which the Salvation Army was responsible for 75% of that award.  This trial decided who was responsible for the Salvation Army employees and any other persons that were hurt or killed as a result.  The Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspection person that was on the site at all times took his life approx. 8 days after the collapse bringing the total loss of life to 8 people.  The developer was asked to pay 5% of the award and others involved in the demolition of the building were asked to pay the rest of the 20%.  This was a tragedy that may have been avoided if the developer and the demolition contractor would have taken the necessary precautions to protect the people inside the building and the pedestrians on the sidewalk walking by the site.
This was an amazing story and we all thank Sal for giving this update to what happened those days in 2013.

Rotary explores solutions to the root causes of conflict

Rotary explores solutions to the root causes of conflict

Dr. Bernice A. King and Amina J. Mohammed to keynote Rotary Presidential Peace Conference

ATLANTA (June 8, 2017) — Public health issues can serve as both a consequence and a cause of conflict. The economic impact of violence containment to the world economy in 2012 was estimated to be $9.46 trillion or 11 percent of Gross World Product (GWP).

Solutions to these and many other contributing factors to conflict will be explored by Rotary members, alumni and students of Rotary’s Peace Centers Programduring Rotary’s Presidential Peace Conference, June 9-10 at the Georgia World Congress Center’s Thomas Murphy Ballroom.

Dr. Bernice A. King

Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change  and daughter of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will deliver the keynote address at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, June 9, and Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary general of the United Nations. At 8:30 a.m. – Saturday, June 10, 2017.

"Fundamental to all human interactions and engagement is respect,” said King. “When it is lacking, it leads to turmoil, tension and conflict. The pathway to peace therefore requires a respect for the personhood, experiences and needs of all people."

Mohammed has striven to protect the environment and promote sustainable development through several positions in the Nigerian government, and has worked with former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the African Women’s Millennium Initiative, Girl Effect, the 2016 African Union reform team, and the Right to Education Project.

“Peace doesn’t get built in congresses or parliaments. And it doesn’t get built by armies, or presidents, or even in the United Nations building in New York,” said John F. Germ, President of Rotary. “It gets built by people who care, and are willing to work for the things they care about. Things like sustainable economic growth. Human rights. Clean water and air. Sanitation, literacy, and health.”

During the opening session, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will welcome participants in a video message. Since 1982, the Atlanta-based Carter Center has been seeking to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.

Promoting peace is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus that includes fighting disease, providing clean water, supporting education, saving mothers and children, and growing local economies. Rotary has contributed more than $3 billion to support projects and scholarships.

July 13, 2017.......Alisa Bowman Speaks About Transgender People

Rotary is a place where members get informed about subjects of interest in the community, especially on topics where there is a lack of information.  Transgender people are becoming a more common topic in the media, in legislation and in our community.

National Geographic in January 2017 and Time Magazine on Mar 15, 2017 did cover stories on trans people.   An article in January 2017 The Rotarian magazine page 30 discussed transgender Rotarians.  The Morning Call covered a trans student in East Penn School District in September 2016.  In 2017, the Boy Scouts allowed transgender children in their programs.

There are about 92 transgender people living in Macungie and 34 transgender people live in Emmaus, based on 0.3 percent of the US are transgender people.

Our speaker July 13th is the mom of a transgender child in Emmaus and will tell you her family’s story.  She is also the co-author of a book on the subject called Raising the Transgender Child: A Complete Guide for Parents, Families, and Caregivers by Michele Angello and our speaker Alisa Bowman.   Jim Palmquist will have a copy of the book to give away to anyone who is interested in reading more about the topic.  The first one to ask Jim for the book gets it!
