Dale Dries

After the Rotary meeting on Thursday, March 24th, we received the sad news that Dale Dries, Emmaus Rotarian and ERC Sergeant-at-Arms Emeritus passed away.   Dale was a fighter to the end as he reported his efforts to receive a new lung and stave off the breath-taking effects of Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Dale loved his close-knit family, his farm, racing cars, fishing and hunting.  He lived life to the fullest, participating in community affairs, local boards, and Emmaus Rotary. Dale was a model Rotarian.  He joined Rotary in July of 1972 and maintained his active membership for over 48 years.  Dale followed his father, Howard Dries, into Rotary and became Emmaus Rotary President from 1981-1982, exactly 20 years after his father served as ERC President from 1961-1962.  Dale was always ready to help, offering the rafters of his hardware store for big Rotary items and an upstairs room for files.  He was generous to the local Rotary and Rotary International.  As serious as he was about Rotary, he made the meetings fun. His humor was quick and on target as he carried out his Sergeant-at-Arms role for 31 years, from 1984-2015.  It was estimated that Dale collected approximately $59,000 in fines and happy dollars. over the years.  No member escaped a Dale witticism, observation or comment.  We will miss his intelligence and humor.

President's Message - Stove Team

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
– Abraham Lincoln

Over the many years that I’ve been a member of the ERC I’ve probably heard several hundred presentations at our weekly meetings: local organizations doing good, great projects in other countries, being made aware of issues that face us as Rotarians, requests for help, etc.  My guess is that each of us has one or more that struck a chord with us and from which we actually took some action.  My actionable presentation was the Stove Team presentation maybe a year ago.  It was a remote presentation by a Rotarian talking about seeing villagers in South America in dwellings where the cooking was done inside and everyone in the family inhaled the smoke literally during their entire lifetime 24/7 every day.   The incidence of cancer is obviously higher with all people in this situation, but the spinoffs were also bad…deforestation of the area around the village to supply the wood for the cooking fires and by some estimates a 20-40% effect on the current global warming that I’ve never heard mentioned as a variable.

From this presentation Linda and I made the $100 investment in a cooking stove for someone somewhere in the world.  Yes, it’s just a drop in a very large bucket [4 BILLION cooking fires in the world every day!] but hopefully it's been a blessing for that one family that received that stove.  Each month I get an email from Stove Team International about this amazing initiative that came about because of one Rotarian’s caring attitude and her passion to help very needy people.  It’s also been interesting seeing how the original stove has been refined to be more efficient and people are paid to install them in the villages which is truly a win-win.

So, what meeting program struck a chord with you and what are you going to do about it?

Last week's meeting snipits
We were presented with an awesome program to help new businesses and existing ones through Rotary.  Derrick outlined how the program works and the obstacles faced and conquered by new start-ups.  Rick Zayaitz and Mario Cozubbo are working from our Club to move this program forward.

By-Laws Amendment 3/22
The Board noticed last month that our By-Laws needed a minor tweak to allow electronic voting for new members and other business of the Club.  The following change to Article VI has been approved by the Board and to become official has to be voted on by the Membership.  This vote will take place at our regular meeting on April 7th.

Article VI: Method of Voting
The business of this Club pertaining to voting as in the case of new members, election of directors, bylaws changes, and other items deemed to be determined by a vote shall include but not be limited to Viva Voce, transactions by electronic means, and/or by ballot which can be done in person or via mail.

Rotary and BEYOND
Emmaus Rotarians truly do live a lifestyle of Service Above Self!
Many of us help with other organizations to raise funds for great causes.  If you wish to mention your outside fund raising event at Rotary, just put up four Happy Dollars and let us know about what is going on.  If I have a website link to your cause I will post it here.

Ex.  I support the PA. Perimeter Ride Against Cancer which benefits the American Cancer Society and Dream Come True.

Check out some of the great work our fellow members are doing in our community outside of Rotary and learn how you can support their efforts.

Bob Halsey's Keeping Tabs on Us!

Can Tabs For The Miracle League LV / Submitted By Bob Halsey

In 2018 We started collecting the Tabs from all types of cans Soda, Beer, Seltzer, Tuna Fish, Sardines, Soup Cans, Etc. In 2018 we were able to deliver Five Full One Gallon Jugs of Tabs…Last year, 2019 we were able to deliver Three Full One Gallon Jugs of Tabs. So far this year 2020 we now have One Full One Gallon Jugs. I would hope we can again this year, 2020, can fill at least another Five Full One Gallon Jug OR MORE. I turn these into the Miracle League in the Middle of October, right before Halloween. They turn them into the Dupont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington Delaware. Other organizations also collect these Tabs, in total the Hospital has been able sell these for enough Money to pay 75% of the Utilities Cost in their Ronald House, where Families to stay at a very Nominal Cost when their Handicapped Children need to go for Treatment. You can bring Tabs every Thursday to our regular Breakfast Meetings.
