President's Message

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

At the risk of repeating myself, let me say “Emmaus Rotary Rocks!”

Sunday’s Cornhole Tournament and Beef n Beer event was a fun, fundraiser that built community. Leave it to all of you to show me how to throw a party for over 100 people and raise money!  All of that money is designated for the East Penn Food Coalition, our food program to meet the hunger of East Penn School District students and families. Both Janet Kolepp, our District Governor, and our Governor-Elect for 2021-2022 Bob Hobaugh were among our guests and were duly impressed by the vibrancy of Emmaus Rotary and the success of this inaugural event.

The food and hospitality and venue at Gio Italian Grill were all outstanding. (Several people recommended that I try Gio’s thin crust pizza in the near future.) And we had some generous sponsors: Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Valley Partners, Keystone Precision Solutions, Spillman Farmer Architects, Embassy Bank, Eric Loch Diamond Jewelers, Ai Orthodontics, and Vinyl Press.

ERC fielded three teams. Mark and Michele Erle went several rounds, deep into the tournament. Karen Hodges and her partner Teri Sorg McManoutdid themselves by dressing like the Bobbsey Twins and earned a mention for sartorial splendor. Roger and Roberta Whitcomb snagged an ad hoc prize from Better Homes and Gardens for representing the Senior Division.

I am sure that in his report to Emmaus Rotary, Sal Verrastro will give us all the details of who won the tournament, how much profit we might anticipate, and be generous in his acknowledgment of the contributions of all his team.  My personal thanks to Sal, Rick, Don, Meghan, Steve, Courtney, and Doug.

Please remember that we are taking subscriptions to our Flag Program. See Eric Loch for details. Memorial Day is this weekend and our first round of flags will wave around the community.

This Thursday, after our regular breakfast meeting, there will be a Board meeting. Please get any agenda items to me.

Yours in Service,

Lexa Shallcross

Emmaus Rotary President 2020-2021

Growing Healthy & Vibrant Clubs Through DEI
A top priority for Rotary International is to value diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within its membership and activities. District 7430 has responded to this goal by establishing a DEI Committee.

Since August 2020, the DEI Committee has actively been exploring and defining how DEI can benefit service and membership in our District and has been creating a program to implement those benefits.  We are pleased to share that much progress has been made developing resources to assist your Club in reflecting the communities you serve.

The DEI Committee would like to introduce its initial presentation to generate and start conversation within your Clubs.  District-wide presentations are scheduled in the Harleysville Rotary Club on June 9 at 7:00 am and in the Quakertown Rotary Club on June 15th at 7:30 am.  Information to join these meetings is available on the District website (click here.)

We invite all Clubs and all Rotarians to be open to ongoing conversations as we grow healthy and vibrant clubs reflecting DEI.  We are all learning together as we educate, enhance and empower one another.

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT!!  If you haven't heard we are back live at the Brookside Country Club.  Vaccinated guests do not need to wear masks inside or outside of the club. Non-vaccinated or partially vaccinated people should continue to wear them inside and outside while moving around the Clubhouse but can remove them when seated.  As of next week (June 28th), the mask mandate expires and all guests, vaccinated or non-vaccinated, can retire their masks until our next pandemic.

But as we move slowly towards getting back together in person our meetings will continue to be Hybrid and  continue to provide you the meeting virtually.

If you are joining us online, please use the link below to join us this Thursday, at 7:30 AM or sooner if you would like.

District D7430 Responds to COVID-19 Crisis in India
Dear Rotarians,

Rotary Zones 28 and 32 (which includes our District 7430) are partnering with Zone 33 to respond to the COVID-19 crisis in India.  We have received a special request from RI Director Valarie Wafer for donations from Rotary Clubs and Rotarians to a special fund to assist with providing oxygen concentrators.

Rotarians are partnering with a disaster relief organization, SEWA International (SEWA). The goal is to raise $250,000 which SEWA will match. SEWA is an international organization recognized in the United States as a 501(c)(3) charity with a 4-star charity navigator rating. Learn more about SEWA’s campaign to defeat COVID-19 in India at https://www.sewausa.org/Covid-19-India.

Those partners will purchase the oxygen concentrators in Singapore and elsewhere and have them shipped to India. RI Director Kamal Sanghvi, of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), and other Indian Rotarians there will be involved in the distribution and transportation of these products to the most critical parts of India.

If you would like to donate, please send your support checks to the Rotary District 6400 Foundation, with your email ID.

June Is....

June is Rotary Fellowship Month

Rotary Fellowships Month - Make New Friends Around the World

Rotary Fellowships Month - June is designated as “Rotary Fellowships Month” by the RI Board to recognize the importance of international fellowship and good will among Rotarians with similar recreational interests, vocations, and health and medical issue-oriented interests, to promote increased participation in fellowships and increase understanding of this program. The RI Board encourages fellowships groups to highlight activities through projects, activities, and events in celebration of “Rotary Fellowships Month” in June.

“Fellowship is wonderful; it illuminates life’s pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth high price.”

  -Rotary Founder Paul Harris
