 Rotary Means Business!

(RMB) is a collaboration of South Central PA business people who believe Rotarians should honor the roots of our great worldwide organization and support one another in business.  In 1911, Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, wrote an article entitled “Rational Rotarianism” which can be summarized as follows: “Life in Rotary should be a rational mixture of business, civic activities, and good fellowship”.  We know that prosperous Rotarians donate more time and financial resources to local and international projects than Rotarians who are struggling to make overhead.  RMB is designed to increase business opportunities for all Rotarians, and in so doing expand the good work Rotary does worldwide.

Did you know that Rotary began as a business networking group by Paul Harris?
Did you know that in addition to North America, Rotary Means Business networking groups have formed in such far-flung places as Turkey and Brazil?
We encourage each Club to send two or more "movers and shakers" to each RMB event and this includes spouses/partners and potential Rotarians as guests.

Dear Fellow Rotarian,

You know that I am deeply committed to Rotary Youth Services. The STEM Academy (STEM YEA), introduced for the first time in July 2022, serves a younger set of students who are still exploring what educational path they wish to pursue. The 2025 STEM YEA will be held July 10-13, 2025 on the Kutztown University campus. The Fourth STEM YEA Big Ticket Reverse Raffle fundraiser is only 3 months away. This is an important function to bring visibility to the Rotary STEM Youth Explorer Academy and also raise funds to help offset costs in order to make tuition affordable for all clubs wishing to sponsor students.

The guest speaker is Dhruv Seshadri, a member of Allentown West Rotary Club and an assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Lehigh University. He received his B.S. in polymers science and engineering in 2014, M.S. and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering in 2018 and 2022 respectively from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. His research involves the development, validation, and translation of wearable technology, bioelectronic devices and therapeutics targeting human health and performance. In addition to his academic achievements, Dhruv has been a member of an International Rotaplast team.

The 2025 “STEM YEA Big Ticket Reverse Raffle Night” is scheduled for September 27, 2025 at the Franconia Heritage Banquet & Conference Center, 508 Harleysville Pike, Unit A, Telford, PA. Tickets can be purchased in advance through August 1, 2025 to take advantage of a 10% discount. Total ticket sales are limited to 150. Your ticket helps to fund the operational costs of the STEM YEA program for middle schoolers, especially under-resourced students, to make it affordable for all our clubs to sponsor students, The ticket entitles you to a fun evening including hors d’oeuvres, drinks, dinner, a Caricatures by Emily Byrne, and a lottery ticket with a chance to win one of numerous prizes totaling $5,000 when 150 tickets are sold. Organize your group and act now to purchase your tickets. We are also looking for sponsorships from businesses and individuals along with contributions of silent auction items. Please reach out to Darlene Scott with any questions.

An Important Historical Message From Roger Whitcomb

Colleagues:  Last week we began including a new element in our weekly ERC meetings.  Going forward over the next several weeks, either Gary Rohrbach or I will verbally share a bit of information, entitled "did you know," from the history of the Emmaus Rotary Club which I have recently compiled.  In this way, we hope that, by doing so, each of you will continue to appreciate how our club has evolved, especially its positive impact on the broader community in which we live.

"Did you know that sometime in the Fall of 1925, Earl Peters, an Allentown music teacher living in Emaus and a member of the Allentown Rotary Club, suggested to some of his Emaus friends that they ought to have a club as well.  One thing led to another and on December 16, 1925, several Emaus businessmen and professionals met to organize the club.  Following the guidelines set forth by Rotary International (R.I.), the original list of twenty-two charter members was closed on January 14,1926 and forwarded to R.I. for approval.  The Emaus Charter Number 2252 was signed by R.I. President Donald Adams on February 22, 1926.  The initial meeting took place on March 18,1926 at which time the Charter was formally presented to the club.  At its inception, the Emmaus Rotary Club has the distinction of being the first service club in the Borough of Emmaus."
Footnote:  Did you notice anything unusual about the spelling of the name of our borough in the above piece?  More of that later including how that matter was ultimately resolved.
