Motorcycle Poker Run
The service projects keep rolling in..yay! Next up is the Motorcycle Poker Run to benefit veterans through the Tails of Valor organization. We’ve had speakers from Tails of Valor and it is truly humbling to hear the stories of veterans who have given so much and how the dogs through Tails of Valor keep them going through very difficult times.
Please support Mark Erle and his team in this wonderful event…If you're still looking to sign up to participate and/or sponsor and/or donate, go to the our website! It's easy!
Flushed – How the Plumber Saved Cavillation
Okay, this is an odd one, but, bear with me there is a Rotary connection. Our daughter got this book at an estate sale and thought that it might be interesting to me [that in and of itself raises some concerns!]. I just finished it and it was much more interesting than I initially thought [don’t judge a book by the cover?] and it is a history of cavillation’s efforts to manage the you know what in our lives. It is humorous, fact filled, nicely researched and full of historical facts about how much, but, certainly not all of the civilized world has adequate waste management which brings me to the Rotary connection. Did you know that Water and Sanitation is one of the 7 Rotary areas of focus? Here’s a fact that boggles my mind…..Around 60 percent of the world's population — 4.5 billion people — either have no toilet at home or one that doesn't safely manage human waste.
Let’s think about joining a Rotary Action Group to help those who desperately need our help.
I’ll bring the book to this week’s meeting if anyone would like to borrow it.
For those members wishing to do Rotary virtually here are the Zoom meeting details. The virtual meeting should be started by 7:15a.m. Feel free to chat with your virtual friends and the members in attendance. Please mute yourself when the President starts the meeting. Use the Chat feature to chat with the Zoom Master and others on the virtual meeting. We'll do our best to give you the same feel of the meeting as if you were able to attend in person.
Please Note that if you are attending virtually please use the following ZOOM link!
In 1988, some of you were starting a family, a new career, SCHOOL-- yes, it was off to college and to kindergarten for some Emmaus Rotarians.
That was the year Rotary International teamed with the World Health Organization to launch a global polio eradication initiative. There were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. There were 150 cases in 2020 and fewer this year!!
What was I doing? Thank you for asking, I finished seminary that spring and was made a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. My Daughter and I were living in Forest City, PA
where I served at two churches. We were an easy car ride to Corning, NY, where my Mother's family lives. My Aunt and I were in the kitchen, she was preparing dinner. My Uncle arrived home and was excited to tell us that that day it was announced at his Rotary meeting that Rotary International had committed to eradicating Polio. As he filled in the details, his eyes filled with tears. They were tears of joy at the thought that in the future no child would die or be left crippled by this contagious disease. That's what can make a grown man cry. Are his tears of joy contagious? Are you excited to think that we are so so so very close to Ending Polio?
Rotary is so close to our original vision of a polio-free world. While an individual shot of polio vaccine costs only 15 cents to make, there are major expenses to reach remote areas and the public officials. So, we continue.
AND.... There are lots of ways for you and your family to participate in this year's Purple Pinkie Race to Zero to End Polio. You can run, walk, or bike. Kids have their own race. You can say no to a tee shirt. And YES! to the beer at the early afternoon Octoberfest. Some may choose to participate virtually (no tee-shirt unless you buy it in the merch corner of the website). Others may just log on and make a donation. Easy. Log in with the link given below.
We already have 7 team members. And are looking for at least 3 more.
Speak to Lexa Shallcross or Cindy Hornaman if you have questions or difficulty registering online. At our breakfast meeting this Thursday, there will be a sign-up sheet.
Look for the Emmaus Rotary Team and join us! Remember to mark any donations at this time to the Race to Zero Purple Pinkie as from Emmaus Rotary. (Our club is number 5427) And SAVE the DATE - Saturday morning, October 2, 2021.

This communication comes to you from District Governor Bob Hobaugh and COVID-19 Advisor Michael Seidner, MD. We wish to share updated guidelines for Rotary activity in the face of the continuing pandemic from COVID-19. The most important step a Rotarian can take to prevent COVID infection is to become fully vaccinated. Masks are recommended indoors for all Rotarians in areas of “substantial or high transmission” and especially for those who are either not vaccinated or partially vaccinated. Immunocompromised Rotarians are also urged to wear a mask indoors. Club Presidents are to report any positive COVID-19 tests of a Rotarian who has participated in the last 14 days in an in-person Rotary event. A Club announcement, tracing and testing should follow any positive test of a Club member in attendance. Presidents, please report such positive tests to both District Governor Bob Hobaugh and Michael Seidner, MD.
Important highlights from the RI May, June, July, and August Board of Directors meetings found at https://my.rotary.org/en/learning-reference/about-rotary/board-decisions include: “To better guide Rotarians in their Rotary-related travel as pandemic threats continue to change and more communities adjust their pandemic restrictions, and to ensure the safety of all participants in Rotary programs, meetings, and events, the Board made several amendments to its travel policy, agreeing that virtual or hybrid meetings should continue to be implemented. The RI Board also “reaffirmed its policy that no in-person Rotary meeting or event shall be mandatory for any participant who may feel uncomfortable attending because of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Health (Health Department) updates its statistics regarding COVID-19 case incidence and vaccination status daily. Fortunately, cases of COVID-19 are falling as more people become vaccinated. Unvaccinated individuals continue to be at the highest risk for hospitalization and death. COVID-19 in vaccinated individuals tends to be milder and in many cases hospitalization is not required. Individuals testing positive should isolate for two weeks and participate in contact tracing. Check the Pennsylvania Department of Health website for more updates at https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Coronavirus.aspx.
Thank you for your attention and commitment to keeping yourselves, your clubs, and the public safe during the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic. As with Polio, please advocate for vaccinations to not only keep individuals safe but our worldwide community!
Bob Hobaugh Michael Seidner MD
Governor, Rotary District 7430 COVID-19 Advisor, Rotary DIstrict 7430
DECEMBER is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month
At Rotary, we believe good health care is everyone’s right. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t have access to basic health care.
Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small. We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together.
Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.
