President's Message - February 28, 2017
As Rotary International celebrated its' 112th anniversary on February 23rd, Emmaus Rotary marked its 91st birthday on February 22nd.  Ninety one years of service to humanity from East Penn to far reaches of the world. Ninety one years sustainably changing lives of people in need.

In honor of this tremendous anniversary I'd ask two things:

1. If you have not made your donation to the Rotary Foundation, I'd encourage you to do so this month. The goal is set for $126.50 for each member. I'd love to see us reach 100% participation in giving. Support of the Foundation will continue to ensure Rotary as a whole, including Emmaus Rotary, is around for another 91+ years!

2. Share Rotary. Bring a friend, colleague, business leader to a breakfast meeting. We cover their first visit. The more Rotarians we have, ultimately the more people we will be able to serve.

I hope to see you at this weeks meeting.

Best regards,

- Jeff McElhaney Jr.

Lily's Hope Foundation
Lily's Hope Foundation a 501 C3 founded by John Kunes and his daughter Jessica after her first child spent 30 days in the NICU (neonatal Intensive Care Unit) in 2010.  Lily was born 2 months early and spent her first month hooked up to machines that helped her breath.  A lot of preemies have lung issues and need help breathing their fist few months.  She spent the next 5 years battling the effects of a premature birth from surgeries to speech issues which she overcame with lots of TLC and prayers.  During her time in the NICU Jessica and her husband realized that no one entered the NICU expecting to be there.  As Jessica said it was an experience I will never forget.  In 2012 she started Lily's hope realizing that when parents are in the NICU they tend to live their lives and forget about the necessities of life.  Lily's Hope provides some of the necessities for the parents of the children in the NICU.
Lily's hope provides help not based on socio-economic status but based on the need.  Families often do not realize their babies need special diapers (preemie diapers), often they need a special diet extra small blankets etc are provided by the First "Aid" Squad of Lily's hope.  Also mothers need access to breast pumps and refrigeration since they often cannot breast feed their babies.  Since 2013 Lily's Hope has helped over 500 families and keep helping more families every year.  They do not have enough resources to help every family but they sure try to. As of last Thursday just Lehigh Valley Hospital Center which has 35 NICU bed....... all of them were in use.  Add to that Lily's hope helps at St Luke's, Grandview and St. Mary's Medical Center.
Last year (2015)Jessica had her second child and he too was a preemie, Aiden was born in the NICU and he is doing well today.  Jessica and Lily's hope foundation does its best to help all families with a little love during their stay in the NICU or when they return home.  They also provide toys and such to siblings during this stressed time in a families life.  Lily's Hope along with their new mascot Hope the Hippo, are doing their very best to help out families struggling and juggling their lives and their child's life.  If you would like more information please go to lilyshopefoundation.org.  Below and above are some examples of the care packages families receive from Lily's Hope Foundation.

Manitoba honors Rotary Peace Fellow for public achievement

By Paul Engleman

Abdikheir “Abdi” Ahmed, a 2011-12 Rotary Peace Fellow and immigration partnership coordinator for the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg.

Ahmed works to smooth relations, helping them see they have more in common than what divides them. “Integration is a two-way process,” he says.

In recognition of his work, Ahmed received the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, one of the highest honours for public achievement issued by the Manitoba legislature, in January 2016.

“I never thought what I was doing had this significance,” he says. “But I don’t look at what I have done. I look at what needs to be done to bring about better living standards for people.”

Ahmed, 37, may understand the needs of immigrants better than most.

Originally from Somalia, he and his family fled the conflict there and settled in Kenya when he was a child.

As a young adult, he moved to Canada as part of the national resettlement program. He began working with refugee children who were struggling in school while attending the University of Winnipeg, where he earned a degree in international development in 2007.

After graduation, Ahmed began working at the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba.

He learned about the Rotary Peace Centers program from Noëlle DePape, a colleague who had earned her master’s degree at the University of Queensland, Australia, through the fellowship.

After Ahmed completed his own peace fellowship at Queensland, he and DePape worked together to develop a curriculum for a summer course that they teach to high school students at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, part of a Rotary District 5550 (Manitoba and parts of Ontario and Saskatchewan) program called Adventures in Human Rights.

“We help them view the world from the perspective that everyone’s rights are equal and understand the idea of building a community where everyone’s rights are respected and each person is given a fair opportunity,” he says.

In addition to his work in Winnipeg, Ahmed serves on the board of Humankind International, an early childhood learning center that he co-founded at the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya with two Somali friends who also immigrated to Winnipeg. He says it serves 150 children with four teachers, and he hopes to expand it to accommodate the many children who have to be turned away.

Despite the suffering he has witnessed and the daily conflicts he works to resolve, Ahmed is optimistic about the prospects for peace and the potential of the peace centers program.

“My hope is that in the next 20 to 50 years, if we have more Rotary Peace Fellows around the world who are speaking the same language and taking on a leadership role to create an interconnected world, things will change,” he says. “I also hope we can find an opportunity for Rotarians and past peace fellows to collaborate on projects in a more defined way.”

Ahmed and his wife, Saadi, have three sons. He says their oldest, Mohamed, 9, dreams of playing in the NBA and says that with the money he earns, he will build houses for the homeless people he sees on his way to school.

Ibrahim, 7, wants to be a firefighter so he can save people. One-year-old Yussuf has not announced any career plans yet.
