Emmaus Rotary heard about the fun of geocaching from Mike Waddell, Trumpet editor and vice-president on February 14, 2019. With laser pointer in hand, Waddell used a power point presentation to give the history and protocols of geo (Earth) caching (hiding). The activity which now has 3 million enthusiasts and over 3 million caches world-wide began shortly after President Clinton released the military's global position system for public use in May 2000. After downloading a free app, seekers use GPS to get close to the hidden spot. Then it's all about persistent looking. Some caches contain SWAG or "Track-ables" for an extra incentive.

He said there are about 15 geocaches in the Borough of Emmaus. He maintains two of them... each cache is registered at geocaching.com, has a name which holds a clue, and always contains a sign-in log for anyone unearthing it to fill in. Waddell's cache at the Wildlands Conservancy is titled "Bye-Bye Birdie". He likes geocaching especially when traveling and is looking forward to his upcoming trip to Spain where he's already loaded a number of caches into his phone for finding while there. He has a total of 42 finds and Rotarian Rose Galeano-Phillips has 15.
