Happy Birthday, Rotary!

23 February 2021

World Rotary Day

Celebrating the 116th Anniversary of

The Founding of Rotary

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Do any of you watch the comedian Trevor Noah? He recently went on about how his Mother sang the Disney song for Donald Duck’s birthday for him each year to celebrate his special day. It wasn’t until he went to kindergarten that he heard the more traditional Happy Birthday song for the first time. And after years of hearing his Mom’s rendition of the jazzy, fast-paced Disney tune, he thought the more popular one that we sing was a dirge!

Indeed, you made have read the blue banner celebrating Rotary above as not much new, ho-hum, yada yada………

But let me give you a bird’s eye view of what I see as the President of Emmaus Rotary. In emails, on conference calls, at online meetings with little Muppet show type screens of faces, and even, yes, face to face, groups are meeting to plan and staff and move forward on several important projects. Today, alone, I …

  • listened to an update on fundraising and grant writing for our Food Program to face hunger insecurity

  • logged in to hear that the Beef N Beer/ Cornhole Tournament has set a date -- Sunday, May 23, 2021 (with June 6th as a rain date) and is out getting sponsors and quotes on s.w.a.g.

  • checked in with Mike Waddell, our President-elect,  who has his Rotary training this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. And he is ready!

  • added the question of when we can resume in-person meetings at Brookside to this Thursday’s board meeting agenda after my weekly conference call with Mike Waddell, Meghan Reed, and Sal Verrastro.  Trust me, stay tuned, and you will be notified about that decision.

Rotarians are engaged around the clock and around the globe. I am happy we are all counted in that number as together we find our way to “Serve Others Above Self”.

Yours in Rotary,

Lexa Shallcross

Emmaus Rotary President 2020-2021
