Emmaus Rotary Club

The time has finally come to celebrate the success of the Emmaus Rotary Club NexTrex Recycling Challenge! From April 2024 - April 2025 Emmaus Rotarians and our Friends helped keep 1000 pounds of soft plastics out of landfills, waterways and natural areas! Together we earned a beautiful park bench made by NexTrex from recycled plastics to remind us of how each small action of saving a bit of plastic can make an impact.  We've created better habits and are helping to preserve natural habitats as our 2025-2026 challenge for a 2nd bench is now in full swing.

Our NexTrex Bench has officially been delivered to the Wildlands Black River Sanctuary! Please join Emmaus Rotary Club for a Ribbon Cutting Dedication.  Bring your family/friends as we are invited to stay afterward to explore Black River Sanctuary with a guided hike thanks to Wildlands Conservancy staff and volunteers.

When: Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 11:00am

Where: Wildlands Conservancy, Black River Sanctuary. This is a special place for Emmaus Rotary. In 2023 Emmaus and Allentown Rotary Clubs worked together with a District 7430 Grant to plant native trees/plants to support the beginning stages of this Wildlands preservation.

ERC History Highlight

Did You Know...

Did you know in 1984 Rotary officially established Rotary Friendship Exchanges, these consist of anywhere from 2 to 12 people traveling from one club or one district to another.

Our district had several club to club or districts in the past. These are visits where one is hosted in a home and then shown the area as well as participating in Rotary meetings. It’s a great way to see and experience another culture as well as make lifetime friends.

In the fall of 2009 Cindy Hornaman organized the Emmaus Club to host a district from New
Zealand for 14 days. The visitors switched hosts halfway through and Emmaus showed them a wonderful time with sightseeing and parties.

Then in the spring of 2010 a group from the
Emmaus Club went to the North Island of New Zealand in return. That was the start of nonstop exchanges in our district that included Australia, Vancouver, Turkey, Argentina, Wales, Romania, Sweden, Northeast England, Oregon, and South Africa.

In 2020 Covid hit canceling in
person and I organized virtual exchanges with Barcelona and Singapore. There has been a total of 14 in person exchanges and 2 virtual ones.

For over 17 years an Emmaus Rotary club
member had been district chair, Cindy Hornaman, Dee Eng and Alicia Orbin.
Emmaus Rotary Club has participated in every one since 2009 whether hosting or traveling on
one. Emmaus Club members over the years who were outbound included, Cindy and Chris
Hornaman, Gary Rohrbach and Dee Eng, Roger and Roberta Whitcomb, Jim and Dawn
Palmquist, Carol and Mike Epperly, Marge Geosits, Eileen Prokop, Burt and Donna Duren, Alicia and Mike Orbin, and Sue Straeter and Ray Doviak.

Many club members have hosted one of the inbound visitors and I hope everyone has a chance to host or travel on an exchange in the future. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime.!

Respectfully Submitted,

Ralph Lewis Food Donation Reminder for November:

This week, I will be collecting Gift Cards, canned cranberry sauce, boxed filling and canned turkey gravy.  Also your generous CASH donation during our club meeting is always extremely appreciated.  Please note I cannot collect fresh turkeys or turky breast.  If you desire to give directly below the list explains how and when you can do that.  Note you can always give gift cards and Groceries Plus can purchase them.  Thank you.

GROCERIES PLUS CHOICE FOOD PANTRY Special Request
CURRENT NEEDS FOR NOVEMBER
• Whole turkeys (up to 16 pounds)
• Turkey breasts
• Gift cards (Aldi, Weis, Giant) to buy turkeys
• Canned cranberry sauce
• Boxed stuffing/filling for turkey
• Canned turkey gravy

Thanksgiving is approaching and we at Groceries PLUS would like to
ensure that all our households have turkey to celebrate the holiday.
Sourcing is quite challenging this year so, more than the items we
typically ask for, we would be most grateful to receive small whole
turkeys (up to 16 pounds) or turkey breasts (fresh or frozen).
We ask that you drop off any turkeys, other trimmings and gift cards to
the church office (418 Elm St.) from Monday from Monday Nov 10
through Thursday Nov 13 between 9am-4pm.
If your collection system can’t accommodate perishable food (and we
understand that possibility) please consider gift cards (Aldi, Weis, or
Giant). We will use them to purchase whole turkeys or turkey breasts.
As a final option, we plan to offer some of the trimmings that go with a
turkey meal. Please consider collecting the trimmings only if collecting
and delivering turkey is too much of a logistics challenge.
In closing, we would greatly appreciate and be very thankful for
anything you can do to flex your collection system to help us provide
turkey for our guests in November.
