Feb 26th Meeting at the Chestnut Ridge
We gathered at Chestnut Ridge for the third time this year and enjoyed a full breakfast provided gratis by them. Instead of paying for breakfast, we collected a suggested donation of $15 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Phoebe charity.
We were delighted to welcome Becky Short, a Penn State Master Gardener, as our guest speaker. Becky opened her presentation with a look at the herbs brought to America on the Mayflower. She went on to share engaging stories about how various herbs have been used throughout history — from mint being used to preserve lamb to sage helping to preserve pork. She also surprised many of us with fun facts, including that deer are especially fond of poison ivy. Becky noted that the use of medicinal herbs dates back thousands of years, with depictions appearing in artwork as early as 18,000 BC.
A warm thank‑you to Becky for an insightful and educational session on the herbs that surround us and the many benefits of cultivating a garden.
DID YOUR KNOW THAT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL IS ALSO CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH?
Rotary International was founded on February 23, 1905, when attorney Paul Harris and three friends formed the first Rotary Club in Chicago, Illinois, to create a fellowship of business professionals. Since its founding, Rotary has grown into a global service organization with over 46,000 clubs and 1.4 million members worldwide. The organization became international in 1910 with the establishment of a club in Winnipeg, Canada, and adopted the name Rotary International in 1922 after expanding to six continents. Over the years, Rotary has been involved in numerous humanitarian initiatives, including the global fight against polio, education programs, and community development projects. As of 2026, counting from its founding in 1905, Rotary International has been active for 121 years, continuing its mission of service above self and fostering international understanding and goodwill.
