A Good Day for the ERC!

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”  - Francis of Assisi

I’ve always believed that Rotary membership comes down to two things…Fellowhsip and Service.  Well, today I saw both is full bloom at the 14th annual golf outing at BCC.  Many thanks to the team that worked so hard to make this event happen again and raise money for the many projects that we do locally and globally.   Thanks to Rick, Mario, Don, Eric, John and Joe for their continued and relentless efforts to make the golf outing and raffle sale a success.  Also, thanks to those who helped out at registration…Roger, Cindy, Joanne and Bill and to Sue Wenner who came in off the bench to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth with 30+ raffle ticket sales.   And many, many thanks to Chris Hornaman for his photographic expertise capturing  the players during this really nice day…well done to all!

Breakfast Table Scramble
It's the Third Meeting on the Month and that means that we are having our monthly BREAKFAST SEAT SCRAMBLE.  How will this work you ask?  When you check in at the registration table for breakfast, you will select the top “card” from the deck of playing cards.  The card you draw will determine which table you will be assigned to for that morning.  Take that card to your assigned table and leave it on the table.  The cards are in a random order.  For example if you draw a “3 of clubs”, you will sit at table #3 this week.  If you draw a “Joker”, that card is considered a wild card, designating that you are allowed to sit at any table you like!  In addition, the Joker card wins you a Million Rotary $$$dollars!!!  We will conform to this seating format for breakfast every third week of each month, until further notice.  FYI you cannot trade your seat assignment with anyone else without a FINE!

We hope you enjoy this new format and make new friends in the process.

Yours in Service

TURNING POINT SERVICE MEETING THIS WEEK!

Hello Fellow Rotarians!

At this week's meeting we are putting together supply kits to benefit women at Turning Point.  They need our help!

Survivors and their children often arrive at Turning Point of Lehigh Valley's Safe House Emergency Shelter with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Welcome Baskets provide families with necessities to help them feel welcome and valued. All items that they receive, they will take with them as they start their lives over.

This week, during our breakfast meeting at Brookside, we are making this a service activity meeting for all and put together these baskets.

If you have any questions, you can contact Nicole and Karen at ercommunityservice@gmail.com.

See you all on Thursday!

BOOKS CHANGE LIVES

In traffic today, about a week after Beverly Bradley from Cops and Kids spoke to our club, I noticed a bumper sticker that read “BOOKS CHANGE LIVES”.

If I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to hear Beverly speak last week about how over a million books have impacted children in our region, that simple message may not have resonated so deeply with me.

If I haven’t been thinking more about Rotary’s area of focus - basic education and literacy - I might not have noticed the sticker as quickly.

If I had never witnessed first hand how important it is to child for a grown up take time to share a book with them, I wouldn’t have believed it to be so true.

I want to tell you about the day I understood what it meant to be a Rotarian.

I had the opportunity to volunteer at our summer “feed and read” program a few years ago. We gave out brown bag lunches and books at Jefferson Elementary. We had a big cart of books for kids to take home and keep. A boy around the age of 9/10 had zero interest in the books. I invited him to come take a look at the books with me. He was hesitant and said he wasn’t very good at reading. I said one way to get better at something is to practice and that we could practice now if he wanted. He picked out an 1960’s, wilderness adventure type, chapter book for young readers. The hand drawn cover of a boy and dogsled team caught his eye. It was about a boy looking for gold in the mountains. He lit up.

We took turns reading pages. He struggled but didn’t give up. We got through challenging words together. He saw that I messed up reading out loud too, and didn’t feel so bad about making mistakes himself. Before we knew it, time was up.  I asked him if he would continue reading at home. He said that he would and that he’d tell me more about the book when I saw him again.

I left feeling that I had really connected him and that maybe he really would read that book.  I didn’t have the opportunity to see this boy again but I’d like to think for one day I made a difference.

Beverly shared how the kindness of others made a difference to her as a child growing up with very little means. Her Mother and educators helped her to understand that while she didn’t have money, she had her mind, and that could take her anywhere.  Now her life’s work is to encourage young children to read and tap their minds to unlock potential.

For all of you who listened to our program last week, I imagine you left feeling a true sense of why community service is so important. Perhaps you reflected on how a small gesture of kindness can mean the world to someone else.  Sometimes those gestures can be a pivot point in another person’s life

October 2, 2021 - Purple Pinkie Event

What were you doing in 1988? How did you earn a living? Where were you living? Who was in your household? Were you a Rotarian?
That was the year Rotary International teamed with the World Health Organization to launch a global polio eradication initiative. There were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries.
Since then two of the three wild strains of polio have been eradicated (in 2015 and 2019). Once there are zero cases in a country, it must remain polio-free for an additional 5 years before a polio free declaration is made.
There were 150 cases in 2020. And fewer this year!  These cases are in Afghanistan and Pakistan due to political unrest, poor health infrastructure, and government negligence.
Rotary is so close to our original vision of a polio-free world. While an individual shot of polio vaccine costs only 15 cents to make, there are major expenses to reach remote areas and the public officials. So, we continue.
AND....  There are lots of ways for you and your family to participate in this year's Purple Pinkie Race to Zero to End Polio. You can run or walk. Kids can bike. You can say no to a tee shirt. And YES! to the beer at the early afternoon Octoberfest.  Some may choose to participate virtually (no tee-shirt unless you buy it in the merch corner of the website).  Others may just log on and make a donation.  Easy.  Log in with this link

We already have 5 team members. And are looking for at least 5 more.
Speak to Lexa Shallcross or Cindy Hornaman if you have questions or difficulty registering online.

Look for the Emmaus Rotary Team and join us!   Remember to mark any donations at this time to the Race to Zero Purple Pinkie as from Emmaus Rotary. (Our club is number 5427) And SAVE the DATE - Saturday morning, October 2, 2021.

September Is....
September is Basic Education & Literacy Month

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

Rotary International's goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

"When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one."

District 7430 Covid-19 Update!

Greetings Rotary District 7430 Clubs: This communication comes to you as we embark on a new Rotary year and assure that club leadership is aware of the Guidelines issued by District 7430 regarding COVID-19. The 2019 suggestion to meet virtually continues, but with Club discretion. The District will meet in-person, virtually or in a hybrid fashion depending on the event and the venue. Masks are recommended. Please report to your President any positive COVID-19 tests of a Rotarian who has participated in the last 14 days in an in-person Rotary event. A Club announcement, tracing and testing should follow any positive test of a Club member in attendance. Presidents, please report such positive tests to District Governor Bob Hobaugh.
Important highlights from the RI May, June, and July Board of Directors meetings found at https://my.rotary.org/en/learning-reference/about-rotary/board-decisions include: “To better guide Rotarians in their Rotary-related travel as pandemic threats continue to change and more communities adjust their pandemic restrictions, and to ensure the safety of all participants in Rotary programs, meetings, and events, the Board made several amendments to its travel policy, including: (a) agreeing that virtual or hybrid meetings should continue to be implemented; and (b) encouraging districts to appoint a COVID-19 adviser with a public health background for assistance in monitoring local guidance with respect to meetings, events, social distancing, vaccination progress, and masking protocols.” Dr. Michael Seidner has agreed to serve as our District 7430 COVID-19 advisor. The RI Board also “reaffirmed its policy that no in-person Rotary meeting or event shall be mandatory for any participant who may feel uncomfortable attending because of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
As of August 21, 2021, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (Health Department) reported increasing case counts throughout Pennsylvania in multiple counties of PA with “substantial” community spread of COVID-19. Unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk for hospitalization and death. Among vaccinated individuals, COVID-19 cases also continue to rise but tend not to require hospitalization. COVID-19 in these individuals still can be transmitted so individuals testing positive should isolate for two weeks and participate in contact tracing. Check the Pennsylvania Department of Health website for more updates at https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Coronavirus.aspx.
On July 27, 2021, Centers for Disease Control (CDC)  released updated guidance on the need for urgently increasing COVID-19 vaccination coverage and a recommendation for everyone in areas of substantial or high transmission to wear a mask in public indoor places, even if they are fully vaccinated. See  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/delta-variant.html.
Please stay current with your individual county’s transmission rate by checking the Pennsylvania Department of Health Early Warning Dashboard located at: https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Monitoring-Dashboard.aspxhttps://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Monitoring-Dashboard.aspx.
Counties with greater than 5% positivity rates are considered to have “substantial” community spread. Thank you for your attention and commitment to keeping yourselves, your clubs, and the public safe during the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic. As with Polio, please advocate for vaccinations to not only keep individuals safe but our worldwide community!
