President's Message
Hopefully, you’ve noticed that I like to start my President’s Message with a quote that somehow sums up what I may take too long to say in writing.  Today I’m thinking about January, ice still coating our driveway, how much harder it is to connect with family and friends during this time of the year and the general malaise that can creep in when the daylight hours are shorter.  My wonderful wife is exercising this morning and that reminds me that we are all responsible for making good things happen in our lives especially this time of year when it’s so much harder to get out and take care of our bodies, minds, and spirits.  I have resisted any sort of non-computer keyboard type of exercise but maybe it’s time to do something more beneficial even for just 15 minutes per day.  Linda found some excellent Silver Sneakers programs that keep her moving, maybe there’s something there for me….Okay, I’ll give it a try!  And, yes, I found a few quotes about exercising…..particularly loving #1.  So, if I can push away from the keyboard for some actual movement, so can you and, yes, I found a few quotes…..

1. “Good things come to those who sweat.” Anonymous
2. “The reason I exercise is for the quality of life I enjoy.” Kenneth H. Cooper
3. “The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.” Anonymous
4. “Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do. Not a punishment for what you ate.” Anonymous

5. “Daily exercise is one of the keys to excellent health.” ATGW

6. “The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.” Anonymous
7. “Make every workout count.” Anonymous
8. “For me, exercise is more than just physical – it’s therapeutic.” Anonymous
9. “Once you see results, it becomes an addiction.” Anonymous

10. “Don’t wish for a good body, work for it.” Anonymous

11. “Sweat is just fat crying.” Anonymous
12. “Exercise, my natural high.” Anonymous
13. “You have to exercise, or at some point you’ll just break down.” Barack Obama
14. “Even when all is known, the care of a man is not yet complete, because eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise. For food and exercise, while possessing opposite qualities, yet work together to produce health.” Hippocrates

15. “When it comes to health and well-being, regular exercise is about as close to a magic potion as you can get.” Tich Nhat Hanh

Last week's meeting snipits
We were presented with an awesome program to help new businesses and existing ones through Rotary.  Derrick outlined how the program works and the obstacles faced and conquered by new start-ups.  Rick Zayaitz and Mario Cozubbo are working from our Club to move this program forward.

Super Bowl Fundraiser
There are only 31 squares to go!  Please help if you can.  Time for you and your friends to get your game on and win some money.  You don't need to know anything about football or even watch the game to win.  Just purchase the blocks you want, sit back and relax until game day.  Blocks are only $56.00 and if we sell out the card we will raise $3500.00 plus to continue our mission of feeding the hungry children in the East Penn area.  All the information needed is on the picture below.  Reach out to Gary Guthrie who is spearheading this effort at g.guthrieerc@gmail.com  See below for how it all works.
ROTARY SUPER BOWL POOL

The Super Bowl board is  laid out in a 10 x 10 grid. Each block (square) is purchased.

After each square is purchased, and all names are recorded inside each square, we will randomly select the NFC team representative and the AFC team representative and place those names on two axises of the board.  Then we will randomly select and place the number’s zero (0) through nine (9) for both axises of the board.  Once this has been completed, the board will be emailed to all participants.

HOW DOES SOMEONE WIN?

EXAMPLE:

Your square is AFC team 0 – NFC team 7
If the score at the end of the 1st quarter is AFC 10 – NFC 7  ( it is the last digit of the score that is used), then you are the winner of the 1st quarter prize.  If your square is touching the winning square on the flat side, then you win the bonus prize ($56). In the event that the winning square is along the edge of the board (not allowing for all four sides to be touching other squares) we will go to the opposite side of the board for the bonus winner.

End of quarter matching score will win $200 (Bonus: those squares that touch the winning square on the flat edge will win $56.)

End of Game matching score will win $500 (Bonus: those squares that touch the winning square on the flat edge will win $56.)
Good luck to all.
This Thursday is Hat Day.

International Women's Day Celebration
Fellow Emmaus Rotarians,

As a follow up to the announcement I made at our club meeting last week regarding our Emmaus Club International Women's Day Celebration Awards, I would like to clarify that our club gives two Awards:  1) The Rotarian Award to a woman Rotarian from a Rotary Club in Areas 1 and 2 (the Lehigh Valley), and 2) the Community Award to a woman from the Lehigh Valley.

1. Rotarian Award - Only the Club President can nominate a Rotarian from their club; however, Rotarians from that club can make recommendations to the President.  A letter was mailed to all the Areas 1 and 2 club Presidents to submit nominations.

2. Community Award - Only us, Rotarians from the Emmaus Club, can nominate a woman from the community for this Award.  You should have received the nomination information either at the November 21 or December 5 meetings if you were present and picked it up as they were circulated around the tables, or by US Mail if you were not there or did not pick it up.

The deadline for nominations is January 21.

If you have any questions about this Award, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or call me at my cell phone 610-392-5134.

Our Committee looks forward to receiving your nominations for the Community Award. Thank you for your support.

Yours in Rotary Service.

Bob Halsey's Keeping Tabs on Us!

Can Tabs For The Miracle League LV / Submitted By Bob Halsey

In 2018 We started collecting the Tabs from all types of cans Soda, Beer, Seltzer, Tuna Fish, Sardines, Soup Cans, Etc. In 2018 we were able to deliver Five Full One Gallon Jugs of TabsLast year, 2019 we were able to deliver Three Full One Gallon Jugs of Tabs. So far this year 2020 we now have One Full One Gallon Jugs. I would hope we can again this year, 2020, can fill at least another Five Full One Gallon Jug OR MORE. I turn these into the Miracle League in the Middle of October, right before Halloween. They turn them into the Dupont Childrens Hospital in Wilmington Delaware. Other organizations also collect these Tabs, in total the Hospital has been able sell these for enough Money to pay 75% of the Utilities Cost in their Ronald House, where Families to stay at a very Nominal Cost when their Handicapped Children need to go for Treatment. You can bring Tabs every Thursday to our regular Breakfast Meetings.
