The Annual Fund-SHARE isn’t just a fund; it’s a partnership. With SHARE, members, through their clubs and districts, help decide which projects to prioritize. You share resources that empower communities near and far. You share in the pride of knowing that your district’s priorities will be achieved through District Designated Funds (DDF). And you share in the action, rolling up your sleeves to make change happen.

Your contribution helps transform lives through scholarships, vocational training teams, and humanitarian service. It’s the powerhouse behind Rotary’s impact, quietly and consistently fueling the work of clubs and districts near your community and around the globe.

In a world full of urgent needs and worthy causes, thank you for choosing to share with us. Thank you for making it possible for us to continue Doing Good in the World!

Ralph Lewis Food Donation Reminder for November:

This week, I will be collecting Gift Cards, canned cranberry sauce, boxed filling and canned turkey gravy.  Also your generous CASH donation during our club meeting is always extremely appreciated.  Please note I cannot collect fresh turkeys or turky breast.  If you desire to give directly below the list explains how and when you can do that.  Note you can always give gift cards and Groceries Plus can purchase them.  Thank you.

GROCERIES PLUS CHOICE FOOD PANTRY Special Request
CURRENT NEEDS FOR NOVEMBER
• Whole turkeys (up to 16 pounds)
• Turkey breasts
• Gift cards (Aldi, Weis, Giant) to buy turkeys
• Canned cranberry sauce
• Boxed stuffing/filling for turkey
• Canned turkey gravy

Thanksgiving is approaching and we at Groceries PLUS would like to
ensure that all our households have turkey to celebrate the holiday.
Sourcing is quite challenging this year so, more than the items we
typically ask for, we would be most grateful to receive small whole
turkeys (up to 16 pounds) or turkey breasts (fresh or frozen).
We ask that you drop off any turkeys, other trimmings and gift cards to
the church office (418 Elm St.) from Monday from Monday Nov 10
through Thursday Nov 13 between 9am-4pm.
If your collection system can’t accommodate perishable food (and we
understand that possibility) please consider gift cards (Aldi, Weis, or
Giant). We will use them to purchase whole turkeys or turkey breasts.
As a final option, we plan to offer some of the trimmings that go with a
turkey meal. Please consider collecting the trimmings only if collecting
and delivering turkey is too much of a logistics challenge.
In closing, we would greatly appreciate and be very thankful for
anything you can do to flex your collection system to help us provide
turkey for our guests in November.

Did You Know...

The ERC and the India 3-H Program

In 1978, in order to increase its impact in the world, Rotary
International established the so-called Health, Hunger and
Humanity or 3-H program. By setting aside unprecedented
large sums of money, the program was designed to enable
individual clubs and districts to develop projects that were too
large for one club or district to implement on its own. An
overriding requirement for a 3-H grant proposal to be funded
was that it had to be sustainable. The first project
underwritten was aimed at eliminating polio in the
Philippines. Indeed, today’s polio plus program started with
that initial grant.

The ERC has participated in one 3-H project—the first time in
the history of our Rotary district that one of its clubs was able
to do so. In 2003, the ERC, working with the Rotary club of
Poona North in India, received a $300,000 grant to provide
microcredits to women in that country so that they could
develop the skills of entrepreneurship.

Working with a NGO called DISHA, we used a strategy
developed by the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh called
microfinancing. Under that program, monetary loans were
made available to women to be used to underwrite small
business enterprises. Ultimately some 1,300 women received
these small $90 grants, at very low interest rates. The
recipients were expected to pay back these loans within a
specified time frame. Once paid back, one could apply for
another.

You may ask: Why women? Bottom line: They could be
trusted better than men with the money. The record speaks
for itself. Over the history of this program, less than 3 percent
of these loans were never paid back. As such, this program
has helped to alleviate poverty at the village level both in
India and other countries.

As district governor at the time, I had the privilege of helping
to shepherd the implementation of this program by visiting
India and interacting with these women. It was truly an
amazing experience and one I often cite when asked why am I
a Rotarian. I hasten to point out this grant would have never
happened if not for the amazing commitment, dedication and
hard work of Rotarian Guy Asnani. Guy, as his fellow ERC
Rotarians always called him, is currently still living but not
doing well in retirement. He truly personifies the notion that
“we make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we
give.” May God bless you Guy.
