Past President Mark Erle began a special presentation on August 15, 2019, with the good news that there will be a 3rd Annual Motorcyle Poker Run next Spring as changing the date and venue seemed to bring more riders to our fund raising event. He then presented a check for $5000 to Jana Spees, Program Administrator and Jason Harrah with his companion Loftus. Erle remarked that he was sorry he was unable to find the large poster board presentation check and Spess said, "this is a big check. We thank you, Emmaus Rotary, for designating Tails of Valor as the recipient of this money."
The Tails of Valor display at June's Motorcycle Poker Run.... three handsome dogs!
Spess said she would like to give Emmaus Rotary the honor of naming one of their dogs. All the dogs are named after fallen warriors. Fellow Rotarians, lets stir our collective memory. Have any Emmaus Rotarians died while serving our country? Let's remember and honor them. Please give suggestions for naming a Tails of Valor Dog to President Steve Gould or President-elect Lexa Shallcross.
Another week has passed! It is amazing how quickly everything is moving anymore. With that said, we are just about to the end of our second month of this 2019-2020 Rotary Year. That only means one thing, everyone has 10 more months to contemplate who their 1 best guest is to invite to one of our meetings. Remember, it's an easy pitch!!! """Can I treat you to breakfast at Brookside Country Club this Thursday to meet some people making a difference in the world!""" Who would not take you up on that.
Committees continue to grow. I am so appreciative for those who have signed on to a committee and are getting engaged outside of our weekly meetings. Committees are truly the essence of the Rotary experience and the organize and make our efforts reality. We will be having the sign up sheets there for another few weeks so those of you who have not chosen a committee, please take some time to sign up so you can be part of the communications between the committee members.
Reminder to all, there is a Board Meeting, this Thursday August 22, 2019 directly following the general meeting. All are welcome and it is another way you can make up a meeting you may have missed.
All the best. Looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday.
Rotarian Bill Tuszynski caught his listeners up at the regular meeting of the ERC on Thursday, August 15, 2019, when he said that there are 85 million displaced people around the globe due to natural disasters and conflict. In 2018, Shelter Box helped 30,000 families in 17 countries where there was flooding, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic activity and conflict. Sadly, almost 3/4 of the people needing immediate shelter and practical help have been displaced due to violence and conflict. Shelter Box began as the millennium project of the Rotary Club of Heston-Lizard in England in the year 2000. Rotary International renewed its 3-year partnership with Shelter Box in 2018-1019. Our District is the #2 fundraiser for Shelter Box in the USA. Shelter Box enjoys a top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.
The basic Shelter Box contains one of four styles of tent best suited to the location, a water purification system, a solar light, blankets and/or mosquito netting, cooking utensils, a shovel, and a kids activity kit. It weighs about 125 pounds and costs about $1,000. Boxes are staged and ready for deployment in Florida, the Phillippines, Dubai, and Malaysia. Shelter Box is always evaluating its usefulness and now has auxiliary "School in a Box" to keep students learning and "Shelter Kit" which contains basic tools and hardware to help homeowners repair their houses.
Shelter Box has been nominated in the past for a Nobel Peace Prize. Shelter Box has helped in the USA after Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Superstorm Sandy (2012). The current goal is to be able to reach and help 1,000,000 people next year.
Bill Tusszynski is a member of the Quakertown Rotary Club and a chemist.
