Kristin Campbell, new Superintendent of East Penn School District, spoke to the Emmaus Rotary on Thursday morning, December 6, 2018. Campbell is a resident of East Penn, has been an educator in the school system since 1995, and has children in the schools she oversees! Her career includes teaching in Eyer and Shoemaker Schools and being the Principal at Lincoln Elementary. The district has 500 teachers, 500 support staff, 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and the high school with a graduating class of about 675 students. The annual budget is $153,000,000 which is 75% locally funded.

Campbell praised the response of the staff, students and community when Emmaus High flooded in November; she noted that full-day kindergarten with purposeful play and hands-on-learning is in place; she detailed some of the STEM curriculum, the Virtual East Penn Academy; and took time to commend the Emmaus High School Interact Club with 80 members who each do 4 community projects during the school year.
As Campbell speaks, Rotarian Tony Moyer, who is Principal at Willow Lane, listens carefully to his boss!
Kristin Campbell then thanked the EPSD Education Foundation for its work.Four Emmaus Rotarians are Foundation members: Sal Verrastro, John Zayaitz (treasurer), Laura Groh and Byrce Ruggieri. The Foundation is independent of the school system. Last Fall, it sponsored a major career awareness event for East Penn students and families.
After her talk, Kristin Campbell enjoyed a reunion with her fellow educator Mike Wadell, retired.
Rick Zayatiz , Emmaus Rotary President, has been working hard to build partnerships with the East Penn School District and other local service organizations to address the problem of food insecurity and hunger for students and their families. Joint meetings are being held and relationships are being forged. Ideas on the table include handing out weekend knapsacks filled with food and holding a summer breakfast feeding program. Keep your eyes and ears open to see how you can help.

Rotary inspires students along with educational partnerships
For the past two weeks, we have heard from Shannon Boyle, the Head of Swain, a private school, and Kristin Campbell, our new East Penn School District superintendent. What have we learned? Both structures help our students learn, in one system smaller classroom sizes, as we compare that to the public system with larger classroom sizes. While other differences may exist, all of our students at both locations are learning how to exist in a new world where technology seems to be the King. Both schools accomplish this task in different ways, Swain allows a less structured academic learning situation with a hands-on approach without having to teach to State or Federal mandates. East Penn also focuses on the STEM subjects using programs like Makerspace, Inquiry, FOSS-Investigations, and Robotics. The point is all of these students are very lucky on all levels to enjoy an education which makes for a better foundation for success in life.

Sometimes at this time of the year, we forget how blessed we are.
Remember no matter which education system, the students and their families have little blips in life where everyone needs a little help from others.
Reach out to others this charitable time of the year. Give if you can, use your talents if you cannot but remember "it is better to give than to receive".
Last week Emmaus Rotary gave three families a little Christmas help. We changed the lives of these families.
Please remember that these students are our future and as such we can help direct them through life's little blips with a little help.
Change lives..... if you cannot give of your time, your talents or treasures find ways to help create the future leaders we have in our schools right now.
Semi-annual invoices for dues went out to all members. They are to be paid by December 15th.

From January through July 2018, our Club filled 5-One Gallon Containers with Tabs from Cans. Hopefully, in the next 8 Months we can again fill another 5-One Gallon Containers. From July 2018 through the end of the Baseball Season in mid-October, we only filled One Additional Container for the Miracle League. These Tabs come on all types of Products, not just Soda & Beer Cans (Tuna Fish Cans, Sardine Cans, Soup Cans, etc). Collecting these Tabs for the Miracle League is a Year-Round Promotion. These Tabs are taken to the DuPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. They are able to sell them for enough Money to pay a Major Portion of the Utilities Annual Cost for the Ronald McDonald House at the Hospital. Please bring them to any Thursday Rotary Breakfast Meeting.
