Last week while we enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery of the Brookside Country Club Patio we learned about the unique way that Zeke Zelker is changing the way kids approach nutrition, exercise and mindfulness through his program Art Spark.

Picture an auditorium of 3rd - 5th graders.  Now picture those kids enthusiastically learning about how they can make more mindful decisions about exercise, nutrition and all around well being. Students are talking about constructive ways to handle feelings like depression and anger and how to deal with bullying. Picture this room filled with kids who are dancing and playing trivia games, there is a live artist creating art to reflect what they are learning about. And it gets better! Later these kids get to make art themselves inspired by all the things they have learned! There is nothing passive about this educational experience! Zeke and his team are getting these kids excited about learning how to live creative healthy lives EARLY. Sounds fun doesn't it!  14,000 kids have benefited from this experience!  Sound like something you could get behind? Click read more to get all the details of how Art-Spark works its magic! Be sure to check out their website too! There are some great videos about the program.  http://www.artspark.us/

Zeke also happens to be one of Mike Waddell favorite past graduates of Emmaus High School. It was fun to see how proud Mike is of all the achievements Zeke has had in his career and the difference he is now making to students.

DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON SCHOOL CHILDREN WHILE IMPACTING THEIR FUTURE HEALTH?

Art Spark has been inspiring children to lead healthy creative lives by hosting assemblies and community art events throughout the Lehigh Valley since 2013, affecting the lives of over 14,000 students and their parents.

Assemblies/Education Art Spark hosts assemblies for 3rd - 5th graders in a fun filled, educational, get-up and move, hour-long experience, where we teach them about nutrition, exercise and mindfulness. Our team engages the students through game play and trivia, breaking up the education by getting the students up and moving. Our team consists of our MC, two dancers/facilitators, a videographer and an artist. The artist is given a lunch box full of art supplies, a canvas and 45 minutes to create a piece of art work based on a theme the students provide. We teach on topics such as: not drinking your calories, foods to avoid, how to read nutrition labels, bullying, paying it forward, forms of expression, how to handle anger and frustration and much more. We change the assemblies yearly, because it’s our goal to return to the schools we serve, so the students get a well- rounded education. During the assembly we select 8-10 students to take part in a community art competition. Community Art Competition Art Spark hosts public art events where the students who were selected during the assemblies create a piece of art work based on their healthy living education they received by our team. Each student is given an apron, a lunch box full of art supplies, a canvas and 45 minutes to create a piece of art, just like the artist during the assembly. The art work is voted on by all those in attendance and the two students with the most votes from each school move on to the finale which is hosted in the spring. At the public art events we also have a local chef on hand who creates three dishes using the same three ingredients, providing samples to all those in attendance. All of the art work created is hung at our sponsor’s locations. Our goal is to reinforce the healthy living education we teach in a fun and creative way while exposing the public to our program. The importance of Art Spark Over the last decade, arts education has been cut or scaled back in many schools leaving behind a creativity void, subjecting future generations of losing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This coupled with the rise of childhood obesity and the health effects caused by it, is creating a rise in health problems and care costs. Our goal is to inspire and educate as many children as possible to lead healthy creative lives to combat these challenges. Would you consider becoming a community partner for the 2020/21* so we can reach even more students?

*Our team is creating a virtual version of the assemblies using web-based tools that will be educational, fun and engaging. We created a way for the community art event to take place this past spring by dropping off art supplies and hosting the competition on Zoom.
