Dear Emmaus Rotarians,
Welcome to September, Basic Education & Literacy Month for Rotary International. RI has set goals to (1) grow basic education and literacy; (2) reduce gender disparity in education; and (3) increase adult literacy. 17% of the world's population over age 15 is illiterate. RI seeks to grow literacy for all people.
And it's Basic Education and Literacy month in District 7430. We are aligned with Rotary International's goals. Theme projects in District 7430 teach reading, and grow knowledge and self-esteem. Those projects include District and Global grant funded service and Club projects funded by Club resources.
September 8th is the United Nations' International Literacy Day. Former Secretary General Kofi Annan said: "Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope." Please let your basic education and literacy projects bring hope into the world!
