Is it Emaus or Emmaus?
In the Fall of 1742, Borough founders Jacob Eberhardt and Sebastian Knauss organized and built a Moravian Church. In 1758, the 102 acre Moravian village was named Emmaus after the Palestinian village in the Gospel of Luke. By the 1800's, it was called Emaus in common usage and was incorporated under that name in 1859. Note the bank inscription in this photo from the Triangle area.

Below is the photo of one of the many artifacts on display at the Emmaus Historical Society on Chestnut Street. Note that both
"Emaus" and "Emmaus" are painted on the drum head.

Emmaus Rotary was instrumental in making the permanent change back to Emmaus. In 1938, Rotarians went door to door asking residents to sign a petition asking for the return to two "m's". The petition was presented in court and the return to the original spelling was granted.
