Our club has the honor of hosting the Rotary District 7430 conference this year because Cindy Hornaman, one of our past presidents, is the current District Governor.  We are encouraging all of the Emmaus Rotarians to support her by attending our district conference.

Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY)

The Rotary Foundation begins at the club level.  EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) is the local clubs addition to the International Rotary Foundation.  We ask every member to give what they can.  To receive the stamp on your name badge we ask for $100 and for the second stamp another $26.50 for the Arch Clump original $26.50 that started the foundation almost a century ago.  To be awarded a Paul Harris a Rotarian needs to give $1,000 dollars to the Foundation.  This is not a one time gift, every time you give to EREY we keep a running total and when you reach $1,000 a Paul Harris is the reward for your giving.
Last year Rotary International awarded $86 million dollars to charities all over the world.  We have given the monies through the local clubs, the districts, and regional Rotary organizations.  When we give to the Foundation it takes three years for our club to realize the ability to get that money back in the form of grant money.  This is a very simplified version of how we get the money back into our local clubs for us to decide on our own projects to support.

4 Way Speech Contest Regional Finals
On Saturday, April 13, the Rotary District 7430 4 Way Speech Contest took place at Willow Lane Elementary School.  Four contestants participated:

Emily Deneen - Emmaus Rotary Club, Selena View - Allentown West Rotary Club, Alexandra Brandis - Quakertown Rotary Club and  Mikaela Letayf - Whitehall Rotary Club

The winner of the contest was Alexandra Brandis who was awarded $200.  Her speech focused on the importance of engaging reading material for school students.  She will now participate in the District Competition on May 4, 2019 at the Renaissance Hotel in Allentown.  The winner of that competition will win $1000.

Special thanks to the following individuals who served as judges, a timekeeper and a teller:  Gary Rohrbach, Andrew Reiman, Kristen Campbell, Noelle Gecik, Mike Waddell, and Cindy Hornaman.
Lehigh Valley is for the Birds!
Barbara Malt, a member of the executive committee of the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society, spoke to the Emmaus Rotary on April 11, 2019 about the birds in our area. With eye-catching photos, she detailed the habitats and habits of birds who are resident, nesting only or migrating through the Valley.  She spent time to inform us about the decline in the numbers of birds due to loss of habitat and bird strikes on windows of homes and office buildings. Malt is one of the three authors of Birds of the Lehigh Valley and Vicinity, Second Edition which is a valuable resource for enthusiasts.

Second Harvest joint Grant Project

Hi Everyone-

Please ask your club members for sign ups to volunteer to help out at the Second Harvest Food Bank grant project to be held on Saturday April 20th. It will start at 9:00 AM and probably last until about noon. We will be building and installing raised garden beds and filling them with soil.

I will be getting back to you with more specific information as to anything which we need to bring, etc. We realized that it is Easter Weekend, but it was the only time that Second Harvest has available.

Direct any questions to me or Cindy and we will coordinate with Second Harvest.

Thanks for your help,
Gary

Staffing LM Community Day Display

The 9th Annual Lower Macungie Community Day is Tuesday, May 7th, 2019.
Our PR ("Promoting Rotary") and Communications Committee is looking for Rotarians to staff our display table. This is a well-attended, packed event with lots of activities like face-painting, kite-building, a petting zoo, senior bingo, tours of the newly expanded library and community center.
We need at least 4 people: 2 or more from set-up to 6 p.m. and 2 or more from 6 p.m. to clean-up. Set-up at the Lower Macungie Community Center on Brookside Road is at 3:30 p.m. and Clean-up is at the end of the event at 8 p.m. There will be a shuttle from the vendors parking area so parking will not be a problem.
Please let John Chisca know you can help showcase Emmaus Rotary and the ways we serve our local communities and the world.
Photos for the Photo Gallery
The ERC has many great activities throughout the year so please send me pictures of the different events for our gallery.  Send them to Mike Waddell at mgwaddx@gmail.com and I'll make sure that they are uploaded to our photo gallery.
