Food for the Needy This Week
Campbells chicken noodle soup can lotCanned Food, Cans, Supermarket, Food

Be sure to bring a canned good to this week's meeting for Rotarian Ralph Lewis' Food for the Needy drive!
We recently heard that 1 in 7 people in the USA is hungry every day. Here in the Lehigh Valley, Second Harvest has figured that it is 1 in 8 people. Better, but many people need our help!
President's Message

Hello Emmaus Rotary,

Thank you to everyone who attended last week's Board of Directors meeting.  When you think you know what you’re doing and are fully prepared, reality hits!!! Last week was the first time I ran a Board Meeting....check that off the list!  What a challenge from sitting on the sidelines...motion this, second that, discussion, call for the question....When?  Man what a ride!  I took good notes so the next Board meeting may seem like your President has done this before.  Either way, I am really enjoying the opportunity to lead our club through a successful year.  And I’ll make a Motion and Second that!!!  :)

I again encourage all Emmaus Rotarians to sign up and get involved with the committees.  So far sign ups have been healthy and many of you have joined several committees.  Thank you.  You will certainly heighten your experience in the ERC by getting involved in service work.

See you all Thursday.  Not sure what I have tucked up my sleeve for this week, however, I’m sure it will be something to create some raised eyebrows!

Steve Gould
2019-2020 ERC President

Honey Bees and Beekeeping

Janice M. Clymer, Macungie resident and ESL teacher for EPSD, spoke to the Emmaus Rotary on Thursday, July 25, 2019, both about the life and work of honey bees and the 20 plus hives she and her husband Terry Clymer maintain locally. She noted the Queen bee only has a life span of 3 to 4-years and her sole job is to lay fertilized eggs, hundreds a day. She has a protective court of a dozen warrior bees. Drones mate with the Queen- once and done. All the work falls to female Worker bees who collect nectar for honey, protect and clean the hive, and care for baby bees.
President-elect Shallcross noted in her introduction that July 9, 2019, the Royal Geographical Society of London declared bees are the most important beings on this planet. But they have joined the endangered species list. Was Albert Einstein correct when he said: "that if the bees disappear, humans would have 4 years to live"?

Clymer answered a question about swarming bees and said to please call a beekeeper and not an exterminator as during this temporary period they are very docile and just going to a new/second hive as the first was successfully outgrown.  Honey bees pollinate our fruits, vegetables, and flowers. She noted the nutritional, medicinal and cosmetic value of honey which has been a staple for humans since the Stone Age. Honey does not go bad and can be stored for decades. She and her husband sell their local honey and combs of honey and wax. Brookside Apiaries, Macungie, PA 484-358-6093

Lexa Shallcross Paul Harris plus 7
Congratulations to President-Elect Lexa Shallcross for her Paul Harris plus 7 last week.  This is a distinction that few Rotarians achieve so please thank Lexa for her generosity and commitment to Rotary the next time you see her.
Rule of 85---A short definition
Periodically I've heard ERC members mention the Rule of 85 but it seemed that there were different interpretations and/or misunderstandings about what it actually means.  So, I did a quick search and this short piece seemed to have the basics for anyone interested.....

“THE RULE OF 85” A Rotarian is exempt from attendance requirements if: 1. The aggregate of the members years of age and years of membership is 85 years or more. 2. The member notifies the Rotary office of the desire to be excused from attendance.    NOTE:  The “Rule of 85” does not exempt a member from payment of dues.  Rule of 85 members are still considered active members and are highly encouraged to continue in attendance at regular meetings and community service events.   To be considered for “Rule of 85,” a member should submit a signed request to the Board of Directors, through the Membership chairperson, for consideration at the following meeting.
Miracle League and Can Tabs
Miracle League of Lehigh Valley
As most Emmaus Rotarians know, I have been collecting Can Tabs for two years for the Miracle League. Last year, the Emmaus Rotary Club provided 5-One Gallon Jars of Tabs. This year we are working on completing our 2ND One Gallon Jar. We still have several months to collect these Tabs, through the second week in October. Let’s try to at least equal last year’s collection of 5-One Gallon Jars Of Tabs .  I really appreciate being able to provide these Can Tabs to the MIracle League every year. These Tabs that come on Soda Cans, Beer Cans, Sardine Cans, Tuna Fish Cans and other Food Products. The Miracle League has several Handicapped Children that regularly go for help to the Dupont Childrens Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware a couple times a year for Rehabilitation Services. The Dupont Hospital is very similar to the Shriners Hospital and St. Judes Hospital that only treat Children, with No Cost Required for Payment. At the Dupont Childrens Hospital, McDonalds provided a Ronald McDonald House for families bringing their Children there for treatment at a very Low Cost. The Hospital operates this House and sells the Can Tabs for Money that almost covers the Annual Utilities Cost for the House. Several other Miracle Leagues and other organizations also collect Can Tabs for them. This is a great way to help the Dupont Children's Hospital by just providing them the Tabs that most people just throw away. Please try to collect these Tabs and bring them to our weekly Rotary Meeting, I collect them and take them to the Miracle League at the end of the Baseball Season.

Dear Rotarians,

Come join D7430 Phillies Phans and Strike-Out Hunger at the 35th Annual Game on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 7:05 pm, as our Phillies play the Chicago Cubs.

The success the Phillies have had selling tickets this year has made seating in some sections limited. Because of their commitment to Rotary, there will be plenty of good seats available. I urge you to get your ticket orders in early. Thanks to your participation, the RI Foundation has benefitted by over $1 million to help eradicate Polio, and thousands of pounds of food have been contributed to Local Food Banks.
